BREVARD - The Tornados went 1-1 this past week, falling to Carson-Newman in Jefferson City on Wednesday, 99-77, while defeating North Greenville on the road on Saturday, 81-76 ... Brevard improves to 5-12 on the season, while falling to 0-7 in conference play ... Five Tornados scored in double figures on Wednesday, led by Samantha Winn with 16 points ... Brevard shot 44.1 percent from the field against Carson-Newman and 46 percent from the field against North Greenville, marking their fifth straight game of shooting over 40 percent ... Saturday's game between the Tornados and the Crusaders started off as a difference of styles as the Tornados came out gunning from behind the arc while North Greenville tried to pound the ball inside ... The game was tied at 43 at the end of the first half as Anna Schlobohm closed out the period with a pair of free throws, and Kelly Hudler blocked a layup by Christina Carlis at the buzzer ... The teams traded the lead eight times during the game before Brevard seized control on a three-pointer by Winn with 7:35 left in the game to give the Tornados a 70-63 lead ... With the Crusaders within three, Amanda Whitaker called for the ball on the left block and after receiving the pass from Millie Wharton, went up and under the defense to put in a layup with 13 seconds left to give the Tornados their fifth win of the season ... The Tornados and Crusaders combined to hit 22 three-pointers during the game ... Samantha Winn led four Tornados in double figures in recording her fifth 20 point effort of the season with 21 ... The Tornados continue South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday as they host Newberry in Boshamer Gymnasium, and then travel to Mars Hill on Saturday.
CARSON-NEWMAN - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles went 1-1 on the week, to move to 14-4 on the year and 5-2 in SAC play...C-N overcame a slow start to bury Brevard College 99-77 Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference action at Hold Fieldhouse...The Lady Eagles held a slim 27-24 lead with 5:49 left in the first half before turning up the intensity on both ends of the floor. C-N forced 24 turnovers the rest of the way and exploded for 72 points on the way to its fifth straight win...Four Lady Eagles finished in double figures in scoring led by a 16-point effort from Mandy Mendenhall (Kingston Springs, Tenn.). Junior guard Ashley Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) tallied 15 points and dished out eight assists, while Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) had 13 points and six rebounds. Ashley Tipton (Knoxville, Tenn.) chipped in 12 points in the win...C-N outshot Brevard with a 56.3 percent (40-of-71) performance from the floor, while the Lady Tornados shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) on the night, including a 10-for-22 effort from 3-point range. Brevard won the rebounding battle 34-33...Despite committing 12 first half turnovers, the Lady Eagles took a 42-30 lead heading into the locker room...A Tipton layup at the 6:53 mark gave C-N a 25-17 advantage, but the Tornados scrapped back with a 7-2 run capped by a Flippo 3-pointer that cut the Lady Eagles' lead to 27-24...However, Tipton then sank a jumper to spark a 15-6 C-N run to close out the half. The Lady Eagles opened the second half on fire, pushing their lead to 54-34 with a 12-4 run capped by a Lindsey Eggleston jumper with 15:51 remaining...Brevard was unable to cut C-N's lead to below 15 points the rest of the way...The Lady Eagles dropped a 87-65 decision to Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday night in Hickory, N.C., snapping its five-game winning streak...The Lady Eagles committed 24 turnovers on the night, preventing them from getting into a groove on the offensive end. C-N shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the field, while the Bears sank 53.6 percent (30-of-56) of their shots. The Lady Eagles were just 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) from the free-throw line, while L-R made 23-of-27 (85.2 percent) of its attempts...The Bears also won the battle of the boards as they outrebounded C-N 39-25, including 14 on the offensive end...Ashley Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) was the lone Lady Eagle to reach double figures in scoring with 19 points...Kyle also had four assists and three steals. Lindsey Eggleston (Buena Vista, Colo.) and Ashley Tipton (Knoxville, Tenn.) chipped in nine points each for C-N, while Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) added eight points and seven rebounds...C-N will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 28 in a SAC matchup at Catawba. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Salisbury, N.C.
CATAWBA - The Lady Indians split a pair of road games last week, winning 74-6 at Lincoln Memorial before falling 88-72 at Newberry ... Catawba is now 7-2 away from home this season ... Catawba overcame an early 28-14 deficit at Lincoln Memorial and took its first lead at 38-25 on a three-pointer by Kisha Long in the closing minute of the opening half ... Down 52-51, the Lady Indians put the game away with a 20-1 run to take a 71-53 edge ... Pamela Muldrow scored 15 points to pace Catawba ... Cameron Clark added 14 points, while Nisha Long added 12 points and eight assists ... The Lady Indians shot just 34 percent in its loss to Newberry ... Catawba trimmed a 15-point first-half to six just before the half, but Newberry went back up 47-36 at the break ... A three-pointer two minutes into the second half gave Newberry a 12-poin edge and Catawba never got back within single digits, shooting just 31 percent in the second half ... Newberry controlled the boards with a 45-34 advantage to help offset a -9 deficit in turnovers ... Newberry shot nearly 53 percent for the game ... Brittany Higgins led Catawba with 14 points and seven rebounds ... Clark followed with 13 points and Kisha Long had 12 off the bench ... Higgins leads three double-figure scorers at 11.7 a contest ... Muldrow is adding 10.4 points and 6.1 rebounds, while Clark is scoring at 10.2 a game and has reached double figures in seven of the last eight games ... Catawba plays just once in the upcoming week, hosting Carson-Newman on Wednesday.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's basketball team (16-2, 6-1) ran its winning streak to five games and remained in a first-place tie atop the South Atlantic Conference standings with Tusculum after defeating Carson-Newman, 87-65, last Saturday at home in a league showdown … L-R, which has also won 14 of its last 15 games, is off to its best start in 29 years when the 1979-80 squad started the year 17-1 … Junior guard Amber Holt (Charlotte, N.C.), who became just the 14th player in school history to score 1,000 points in her L-R career, led Lenoir-Rhyne with 18 points and nine assists while junior guards Jami Safrit (Hickory, N.C.) and Brittany Mitch (McLean, Va.) added 16 points each as L-R used a 16-5 run in the second half to push its advantage to 79-55 with 4:08 left and cruised to the win … Freshman guard Cameron Sealey (Gastonia, N.C.) sparked the Bears in the first half, scoring 12 of her 13 points before intermission as L-R led 40-32 at the break … Lenoir-Rhyne also shot 23-of-27 (85.2 percent) from the free throw line and forced Carson-Newman into 24 turnovers … Holt now has 1,005 points for her career … Safrit was also playing in her first game since December 12 … Lenoir-Rhyne improved to 7-1 at home this year as well … Lenoir-Rhyne remains at Shuford Gymnasium to face Wingate (Wednesday at 6 p.m.) and Tusculum (Saturday at 6 p.m.) this week in a pair of SAC contests … Wingate leads the all-time series with Lenoir-Rhyne, 48-9, while L-R holds a 12-9 advantage over Tusculum … The Pioneers defeated the Bears earlier this year by a 79-72 score in Greeneville, Tenn.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - The Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team watched a 14-point lead diminish into an 18-point deficit by the 5:46 mark of the second half in their 74-66 loss to Catawba College on Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference play … After reeling off the first 11 points of the game, the Lady Railsplitters took a 14-point lead with 8:11 to go in the first half before surviving a late-half Catawba run and taking a narrow 40-38 lead into the locker room … As the second half got underway, Catawba wasted no time in establishing the tempo. The Catawba Indians started pounding away in the paint and from the perimeter as soon as the ball came into play and opened an 18-point margin with less than six minutes to play … Despite the deficit, the Lady Railsplitters made a run late in the game of their own that cut the margin to only six with 1:10 to play however, couldn't get over the hump and the LMU women eventually lost 74-66 … LMU was led off the bench by guard Amberly O'Dell who hit 5-8 shots behind the arc and two inside the circle for 19 points, while sophomore Stephanie Wagner finished the game with 12 and Kara Harris had 10 … Mars Hill used a strong rebounding effort to defeat Lincoln Memorial 89-75 Saturday afternoon inside Stanford Arena. The Lady Lions improve to 10-8 overall, 3-4 in the SAC. The Lady Railsplitters drop to 6-12 overall, 1-7 in the SAC. After Stephanie Wagner (Elkhart, Ind.) opened the game with a three pointer for Lincoln Memorial, Mars Hill went on a 10-0 run and held the Railsplitters scoreless for a stretch of 3:14 until the 16:00 mark in the first half. The Lady Lions grabbed their first double-digit lead of the game, 16-6, off a free throw by Danielle Francis (Bamberg, S.C.) with 13:57 left in the half. Mars Hill was on fire from the field, hitting 7-11 shots, good for a 63.6 percent clip. Lincoln Memorial hit only 3-8 field goals (37.5 percent). The Lady Railsplitters responded with a 10-0 run and tied the game at 16-all off a three-point bucket by Kara Harris (Alcoa, Tenn.) at the 9:53 point. The Lady Lions came back with a 11-4 run of their own and took a 27-20 lead at the 6:05 mark off a steal and layup by Shamia Terry (Greenville, S.C.). Sarah Harrison (Sneedville, Tenn.) cut the deficit to six points, 32-26, at the 4:06 point in the first half with a shot from behind the arc, but Brittini Young (Ramseur, N.C.) responded on the next possession for Mars Hill with a three of her own. Mars Hill grabbed its largest lead of the half, 43-30, off a layup by Taylor Deal (Catawba, N.C.) and carried that score into halftime. In the first half, the Lady Lions shot 51.4 percent (18-35) from the field but were only 3-12 from behind the arc. The Lady Railsplitters hit 47.6 percent (10-21) from the field and were 7-12 from three-point range. Mars Hill outscored Lincoln Memorial 20-2 in the paint and 14-2 off second chance points. The Lady Lions forced six steals and outrebounded the Lady Railsplitters 22-12 overall and 10-1 on the offensive glass. Mars Hill opened the second half strong and its largest lead of the game, 51-34, off an old-fashioned three-point play by Deal with 17:39 left in the game. Dayshalee Salaman (Carolina, Puerto Rico) scored 10 straight points for Lincoln Memorial to cut Mars Hill's lead to 56-44 with 12:50 left in the game. The Lady Railsplitters cut the deficit to single digits, 58-49, off a three-pointer by Wagner at the 11:19 mark, but an old-fashioned three-point play by Jessica Blanford (Concord, N.C.) stretched the Lady Lions advantage back to 63-51 with 9:47 left in the game. Again Lincoln Memorial cut Mars Hill's lead to single digits, 63-56, off a three-point trey by Amberly O'Dell (Argos, Ind.), but Deal got an offensive rebound and putback to give the Lady Lions another double-digit advantage, 67-56, at the 7:18 mark. Whitney Vannoy (Harrogate, Tenn.) scored eight straight points for the Lady Railsplitters, including two three-pointers, to trim the score to 71-67 at the 4:50 mark, but an Ariel Okunowo (Decatur, Ga.) three-pointer from the corner pushed Mars Hill's advantage to 12 points, 78-67, with 3:36 left in the game. Lincoln Memorial would get no closer than seven points, 82-75, for the rest of the game. Terry led six Mars Hill players in double-figure scoring with 17 points. She also recorded a team-high 13 rebounds and four steals. Young had 16 points and nine assists. Blanford posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Deal had 14 points and nine rebounds. Okunowo netted 13 points. Bria Smith chipped in 10 points for the Lady Lions. Wagner poured in a game-high 18 points for Lincoln Memorial. Salaman recorded 17 points and six assists. The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Railsplitters 40-22 in the paint and 20-4 off second chance points.
MARS HILL - Wingate University sophomore guard CC Brooks (Mount Holly, N.C.) poured in a career-high 23 points to lead the Bulldogs to an 84-75 overtime victory over the Lions of Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night in Cuddy Arena. Mars Hill falls to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the SAC ... Sophomore guard Bria Smith (Snellville, Ga.) led the MHC Lions with 18 points. Sophomore guard Brittini Young (Ramseur, N.C.) added 16 points, while senior guard Shamia Terry (Greenville, S.C.) had 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds ... The Bulldogs used a 18-2 run to turn a 23-23 tie into a 41-25 lead with one minute remaining in the half. Five different players scored during the run, with senior forward Leslie Tucker (Matthews, N.C.) hitting a pair of jumpers to conclude the flurry. The Lions scored the final four points of the half to cut the deficit to 12 ... A pair of free throws from senior guard Brittany West (Valdese, N.C.) gave the Bulldogs a 62-42 lead with 10:37 remaining. A quick 8-0 spurt made it 62-50 on a jumper from Terry. The Lions continued to chip away at the lead, getting a three-pointer from Smith followed by a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Jocelyn Williams (Greensboro, N.C.) to make it 69-63 at the four-minute mark ... Wingate took control in the overtime, scoring the first seven points to go on top 80-73. Rosser started it with a jumper, while Atkinson finished the spurt with a free throw at the 1:38 mark. NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's basketball team went 1-1 this past week with a win over Catawba and a loss to No. 8 Tusculum… This past Wednesday the team fell short of a victory on the road against the Pioneers, 74-63… Janine Ward (Tallevast, Fla.) set season high 15 points and led Newberry in rebounds with 11... It was the first double-double in her career at Newberry... Anita Bulcher (Russia, Ohio) also played well, earning a team high 17 points and nine rebounds… Bulcher sank 7-of-11 from field goal range and 3-of-4 from the foul line… Monica Alexander (Norcross, Ga.) played very well in the first half, earning a team high 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field... She kept her team in the game and was even the team's only scorer for a 12 minute stretch... Alexander finished the game with 15 points and five assists… The game came down to field goal shooting as the scarlet and gray only managed to make 32.3 percent of their shots from the floor… They uncharacteristically could not find their outside touch, making only 4-of-18 from behind the arc… They rebounded from the road loss by staying undefeated at home with an 88-72 victory over Catawba… Laura Marquardt (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) led the scarlet and gray to victory with a game high 19 points... She was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line and shot a phenomenal 5-for-7 from three point range... Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) earned her fifth double-double of the season with a game high 10 rebounds and 12 points… Alexander was the team's second leading scorer, earning 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field... She also pulled down seven boards and dished out four assists... Ward led the team in assists and set a new career high with 10… Rounding out the five players that scored in double figures is Bulcher with 14 points and Sade Coates (Meridian, Miss.) with 10… The scarlet and gray earned their seventh home win with a fantastic shooting display... They shot 52.6 percent from the floor and a stellar 60 percent from three-point range overall… They were also dominant inside, scoring 30 points in the paint to Catawba's 16... On defense, the scarlet and gray held the Catawba Indians to 4-for-21 from behind the arc… With the win, the Newberry College women's basketball team moves to 12-6 overall, 5-2 in the SAC, and 7-0 at home… They will return to action this Wednesday when they travel to Brevard at 6 p.m.
TUSCULUM - The eighth-ranked Tusculum College women's basketball team posted a pair of pivotal South Atlantic Conference victories last week to reclaim the top spot in the conference standings alongside Lenoir-Rhyne with a 6-1 mark in league play thus far…Tusculum enters the final week of January with a 16-2 overall record, having won 13 of its last 14 games…The Pioneers rebounded from last Saturday's loss to Carson-Newman with a 73-64 win over Newberry on Wednesday, as junior Stephany Neptune led all scorers with 19 points while tying a school record with six blocked shots…Jasmine Parker poured in 12 points and pulled down a season-high nine rebounds, while seniors Shantae Shank and Ashli Oliver each had 11 points…Tusculum followed its win over Newberry with a 98-79 victory over Wingate, last year's SAC Tournament champion…Five Pioneers scored in double figures, led by Neptune's 21 markers on 7-of-14 shooting to mark her fifth consecutive game in double digits…The 5-9 junior also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to extend her streak of five or more boards to 53 consecutive games…Tusculum had five players score at least 14 points, including Ashli Oliver, the school and SAC all-time leader in three-pointers, who knocked down 5-of-8 shots from behind the arc to record 16 points on the afternoon…Nikki Van Dine poured in 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting while Jasmine Gunn and Jasmine Parker registered 15 and 14 points, respectively while combining to account for 13 assists and five steals…Oliver knocked down eight shots from behind the arc last week to move closer to a tie for fifth on the all-time NCAA Division II three-point field goal list, currently sitting sixth with 348 career triples…Neptune recorded seven blocked shots last week to inch closer to tying Candice Combs' program record of 125 career rejections, currently sitting second with 118…Tusculum has posted a field goal percentage of at least 43 percent in each of its last 11 games, entering the week atop NCAA Division II with a 48.9 percent clip from the floor this season…The Pioneers are a perfect 9-0 in Pioneer Arena this season, and having won their last 19 games at home dating back to the spring of 2007…Tusculum is 11-1 this season when blocking five or more shots, and are a perfect 11-0 when holding its opponents to less than 70 points…The Pioneers are averaging a SAC-best 86.2 points per game while outscoring their opponents by 22 points per contest to lead the conference…Tusculum is on the road for a pair of SAC matchups this week, travelling to Mars Hill on Wednesday and Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.

The contest was a re-match of the 2008 Food Lion SAC tournament championship game (won 76-74 by Wingate on March 9, 2008) … Tusculum hit 31-of-68 attempts from the floor (45.6 percent), including 11-for-22 from downtown (50.0 percent). The Pioneers forced 23 turnovers by the Bulldogs Saturday, converting those Wingate miscues into 31 points.
