Wingate's DeLong Named 2021 SAC Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate University's McKenna DeLong was voted the 2021 South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced today.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee. The winners are selected based on their achievements in academics, athletics, service, and leadership.
DeLong, a senior finance student-athlete for the Bulldogs, has a 3.81 GPA is a three-time SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and Wingate President's List selection. She is also a two-time Wingate Dean's List honoree and was a 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
"McKenna embodies the definition of student-athlete," said Wingate interim head women's soccer coach Abbey Frail. "She's worked incredibly hard to become a leading player for our team over the past few years and she applies the same level of dedication to her pursuits away from soccer. We're very proud of McKenna and have no doubt she'll continue to set a high standard on and off the field."
On the field, DeLong earned first team All-SAC accolades for the third consecutive year in 2021 as a midfielder. She registered four goals and nine assists on the year and ranked second in the SAC in assists and was ranked No. 11 in points (17).
A native of Reading, Pa., DeLong is extremely active in the Wingate community serving as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and as a volunteer coach for the Wingate International Soccer Academy. She has helped pack backpacks for local schools through the Classroom Central program and she is a valuation intern at Cherry Bekaert, LLC.
