Wingate's Grieco Named 2021-22 South Atlantic Conference Male Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate University's Willie Grieco has been selected as the 2021-22 South Atlantic Conference Male Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Thursday (June 23). The Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards are selected by a vote of the league's athletic directors.
Grieco, a junior from Lawrenceville, Ga., was the 2022 SAC Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II National Attackman of the Year, and the USILA Region Offensive Player of the Year. He was a first team USILA and USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American, as well as a first team All-SAC selection, leading the league in points (113) and assists (67). Grieco led the nation in points per game and assists per game, while becoming the first player in SAC men's lacrosse history to record over 100 points in a single season, and he set the records for points and assists in a season at Wingate.
Additionally, Grieco helped lead the Bulldogs to the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals and helped them earn a national top-10 ranking throughout the season.
He finished the season with 46 goals, 67 assists, 113 points, 31 ground balls, and seven caused turnovers.
Grieco becomes the tenth Wingate student-athlete to receive Athlete of the Year honors and the first Male Athlete of the Year from Wingate since Dodson McPherson in 2010-11.
