Mars Hill’s Williams, Newberry’s McElwee Named Baseball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Mars Hill outfielder Brian Williams and Newberry hurler Josh McElwee have been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week announced conference officials Tuesday.
Williams, a 5-10, 195-pound senior from Orlando, Fla., hit .722 in four games last week with 14 RBI, two doubles, a triple and two home runs for the Lions. The Palm Beach Atlantic product went 13-for-18 on the week, including 10-of-13 (.769) in a three-game SAC series at Wingate. He started the week going 3-for-5 with four RBI in a 16-14 loss to No. 23 Anderson. In the second game of the Wingate series, Williams went 5-for-6 with seven RBI, including a triple and two home runs.

McElwee, a 6-4, 200-pound sophomore right-hander from Andrews, S.C., posted a 1-0 record in his two starts during the week (both Newberry wins). In Newberry's 13-2 win over Carson-Newman, McElwee recorded 15 strikeouts in his eight-inning effort. In fact, he struck out the first nine batters to start the contest. His strikeout tally is tied for fifth most in SAC history. The Andrews High School graduate fanned three batters in his two innings of work against Bloomsburg.
The SAC Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
