Wingate’s McPherson, Catawba’s Huneycutt Named Baseball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Wingate University's Dodson McPherson has been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week and Catawba College's Wil Huneycutt earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending February 22, announced conference officials Tuesday.
McPherson, a sophomore outfielder from Graham, N.C. (Graham HS), hit .389 for the week, while driving in 14 runs and helping the Bulldogs to four victories. The Bulldogs are 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. McPherson got his week started by driving in two runs in the 6-3 win over Belmont Abbey. He went three-for-four with a homer, five RBI and two runs scored in the 16-11 non-conference win over LRU. McPherson had a triple, homer and seven RBI in Wingate's 19-16 win at Lenoir-Rhyne, while also scoring four times. McPherson is hitting .435 on the year, with two homers, two triples and 15 RBI, while also scoring 11 times.

Huneycutt, a sophomore from Locust, N.C. (W. Stanly HS), had a save and a win in Catawba's opening series at pre-season league favorite Tusculum as the Indians took two of three. In the opener against the Pioneers, Huneycutt entered in the eighth with the bases loaded and Catawba ahead 8-3 and posted the final out. He then threw a perfect ninth for the save. In the final game of the series, he got Catawba out of an inning when Tusculum scored five runs then tossed three shutout innings as the Indians rallied for the win. He recorded a career-best six strikeouts over those three and two-thirds innings. For the week, Huneycutt allowed just a single unearned run on three htis over five and two-thirds innings of work with eight strikeouts.
