Catawba’s Dula, Jankowski, Wingate’s Yeung, Newberry’s Sturkie Named Baseball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Wingate University's Brian Yeung and Catawba College's Chris Dula have been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Players of the Week and Catawba's JJ Jankowski and Newberry College's Tyler Sturkie earned league Pitchers of the Week honors for the week ending April 10, announced conference officials Monday.
Dula, a freshman from Troutman, NC (South Iredell HS), hit .500 (8-for-16) during the week and saved his best game for the final game of the Carson-Newman series that clinched the league title for Catawba. The freshman went 4-for-4 in the finale with a pair of home runs and seven RBI. He tied the game with a three-run homer, scored the go-ahead run after a double in the sixth then iced the game with a grand slam in the seventh. He went 3-for-4 in a non-conference win over Wingate then added a hit and two RBI in the opener against Carson-Newman. For the week, Dula collected 10 RBI and scored five runs.
Yeung, a redshirt sophomore from Raleigh, N.C. (Wakefield HS), racked up 13 hits in 23 at bats (.565), with eight of those hits going for extra bases. He had three homers, four doubles, a triple, 12 RBI and seven runs scored. Yeung is the nation's leader in doubles. He had a double and two RBI against Catawba. He had three hits including a double against Erskine. Yeung had a homer and two RBI in Friday's win over Anderson. He went three-for-four with a double, triple, three RBI and a run scored in Saturday's first victory. He capped his week by blasting two homers and a double, driving in five runs and scoring three as the 'Dogs completed the weekend sweep.
Jankowski, a junior from McMurray, PA (Miami, OH), limited Carson-Newman to just three hits over eight innings in the middle game of the weekend series. He allowed one run and struck out 13 in the victory. After the Eagles loaded the bases in the third inning with two outs, Jankowski would retire 14 straight, including one stretch of six consecutive strikeouts.
Sturkie, a sophomore from West Columbia, S.C. (Airport HS) had a stellar week, appearing in three games and earning three saves. Each save resulted in a one-run victory as the Wolves went 4-0 on the week. In Wednesday's 14-13 win at No. 9 Georgia College, Sturkie came in and struck out all three batters he faced to give Newberry the win. On Friday night, he struck out 2 of 3 Lenoir-Rhyne batters, and in Saturday's second game, he worked his way out of a jam, inducing a game-ending double play. He had a 0.00 ERA on the week, allowing no runs and striking out five in 3.1 innings.
