Tusculum 15, Wingate 1 (Box Score)
FOREST CITY, N.C.-Tusculum continued its hot-hitting and dominance on the mound to earn a 15-1 victory over Wingate in the third round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship.
A pair of five-run innings and a solid pitching performance from Adam Sigmon keyed the Tusculum victory. The Pioneers' six-through-nine hitters combined for ten RBI's to pace the offensive effort. With the victory, Tusculum advances to the championship round at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Wingate will face the winner of the Carson-Newman vs. Catawba game at 7:30 p.m. tonight to determine who will advance to the championship round to face the Pioneers.
Tusculum has now outscored its opponents 35-2 over the first three games of the tournament.
Sigmon worked a complete game, allowing a single earned run on seven hits to earn the victory. Sigmon walked one and struck out seven.
Once again, Tusculum wasted no time in putting a crooked number on the scoreboard early. The Pioneers loaded the bases immediately in the first. Matt Henriksen worked a walk to bring in the first run before the Pioneers broke out the big bats. Back-to-back two-run doubles by Carlos Santana and Heath Comerford made the score 5-0 after an inning of play. Comerford had three RBIs on the afternoon.
The Pioneers added two runs in the top of the third. Henriksen scored on a wild pitch and Tripper Crisson added a sacrifice fly. Crisson totaled three RBI in the game for the Pioneers.
Tusculum added a second five-run inning in the top of the sixth. Alexi Colon brought in a run when he was hit with a pitch. Henriksen added an RBI-double, and Crisson a two-run single in the inning. The Pioneers tacked on three additional runs in the ninth.
Brian Yeung homered in the ninth inning for Wingate to break up the shutout. It was the first earned run allowed by Pioneer pitching in the tournament.
Carson-Newman 7, Catawba 5 (Box Score)
FOREST CITY, N.C.- Carson-Newman led by as many as six runs, but had to stave off a late rally by Catawba to earn a 7-5 victory in the third round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship.
Carson-Newman led 7-1 through six innings, but Catawba rallied for four runs to keep the outcome in doubt until the end. Carson-Newman was led by SAC Player of the Year Kyle Koeneman with two hits, including a three-run homer. Chris Dula had two hits and two RBI for Catawba. Carson-Newman faces Wingate tonight, with the winner advancing to tomorrow's championship round. Catawba is eliminated from the tournament.
Koeneman's three-run jack gave Carson-Newman an early advantage after an inning of play. An RBI-groundout by Cody Fox made the score 4-0 after three innings.
An RBI-double by Keaton Hawks got Catawba on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, but Carson-Newman came back to score three unanswered runs. An RBI-single by Lance Rorex in the bottom of the fifth and a two-run single by Lance Reed in the bottom of the sixth gave the Eagles a 7-1 lead.
Catawba's big eighth inning kept the Indians in the game until the end. Dula's two-run triple cut the score to 7-3. Cameron Beard followed with an RBI-groundout to cut the deficit to three, and Hawks came around to score on an error to trim the deficit to 7-5.
The Indians put two runners on base in the final inning, but Brandon Timmerman came in to record the final out and earn the save for Carson-Newman. It was the second save of the tournament for Timmerman.
Chris Armstrong earned the victory for the Eagles with 7.1 innings of work. Armstrong allowed four earned runs on six hits, walked five and struck out six.
Wingate 17, Carson-Newman 2 (Box Score)
FOREST CITY, N.C.-A grand slam by Jacob Karr broke open a tight game and the Bulldogs poured it on in the late innings to earn a 17-2 victory over Carson-Newman and advance to the championship round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship.
Karr's grand slam in the top of the eighth turned a two-run Wingate lead into an 8-2 cushion. Karr's grand slam was one of his two hits on the night. Thomas Spitz slammed two homers and drove in five runs for the Bulldogs. Wingate hit five home runs on the night. The Bulldogs advance to the championship round to face Tusculum at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Carson-Newman is eliminated from the tournament.
Carson-Newman struck first to take an early lead. Cody Fox drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sac bunt, stole third, and scored on a passed ball to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Spitz's two-run bomb in the top of the third gave the Bulldogs a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the night. An RBI-single by Jason Hunter made the score 3-1 in the top of the fourth.
Carson-Newman responded once again with a run. Bo Ausmus' RBI-groundout cut the score to 3-2.
Wingate scored another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single by Clark to take a 4-2 lead before Karr's grand slam put the game out of reach in the eighth.
The Bulldogs added nine insurance runs in the ninth, including three on the second of Spitz's homers. Brian Yeung added a two-run homer in the inning. Will Davis capped the inning with a pinch-hit two-run blast.
Brett Morgan earned the victory in relief for Wingate with 3.2 innings of scoreless work. Morgan surrendered just one hit, walked two and struck out five.
Tomorrow's championship round will begin at 1 p.m. as Tusculum
takes on Wingate. A victory by Tusculum would give the Pioneers the
league championship, while a victory by the Bulldogs would force a
second game to determine the SAC champion.
