Tusculum’s Stevens, Newberry’s Roberts Picked as SAC Baseball Players of the Week
Tusculum catcher Matt Stevens and Newberry starting pitcher Alex Roberts have been named the SAC Baseball Players of the Week after playing key roles in conference series sweeps over the weekend, it was announced on Tuesday.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Tusculum catcher Matt Stevens and Newberry starting pitcher Alex Roberts have been named the SAC Baseball Players of the Week after playing key roles in conference series sweeps over the weekend, it was announced on Tuesday.
Stevens led Tusculum to a perfect 4-0 record last week by hitting .538 with an on-base percentage of .632 and a slugging percentage of 1.385.
The junior opened his week with a home run and two RBI in a 6-1 victory at North Greenville, then piled up six hits and six RBI in a three-game weekend sweep of Anderson.
Stevens' biggest game of the week came in the second game of a Saturday double-header with AU, where he went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI and two runs scored in a 7-3 victory.
In total, Stevens scored eight runs on the week, drew three walks and stole a pair of bases. He is tied for second in the SAC with four home runs, tied for third with 15 RBI and leads the league with 10 stolen bases this season.

Roberts started for Newberry in the Saturday opener of what was ultimately a series sweep over Catawba, going seven innings and allowing only one unearned run to record the win.
Roberts surrendered just three hits while striking out 10 against the Indians, who entered the series ranked No. 7 in the nation.
He is now 2-1 on the season with a 1.88 ERA. The sophomore leads the SAC with 28.2 innings pitched and is tied for fourth in the league with 24 strikeouts.
