Newberry's Sneed Named South Atlantic Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Newberry's Jeff Sneed was voted the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the League announced today. He earned the honor for his achievements in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports, and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee.
Sneed, a redshirt junior from Cumming, Ga., carries a 3.9 GPA as a business administration and graphic design major. A four-time Dean's List honoree, Sneed earned South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's honor roll honors as a sophomore. He also is a two-time NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award winner.
"Jeff is a generous young man who values hard work and personal achievement," said head baseball coach Russell Triplett. "He has always put an emphasis on academics while maintaining an incredible work ethic on the athletic field."
In his two years as a Wolf, Sneed has posted a .313 average at the plate to go along with a .437 slugging percentage. He has 114 hits in his 96 starts as well as 24 doubles, seven homers, 76 RBI and 67 runs scored. Sneed has caught 31 base runners stealing and has a career fielding percentage over .900.
In the community, Sneed has served as an instructor at Newberry's free children's baseball camp and worked with the Irmo/Chapin Recreation Commission's Therapeutic Recreation Baseball Team the Grasshoppers. He has helped the Newberry Rescue Squad in designing publicity materials and has been an active volunteer with the Make-A-Wish foundation.
Sneed is also involved on the Newberry campus as a member of the Newberry Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
