The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate catcher Jed Bryant was named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Baseball Player of the Week, while Newberry right-handed pitcher Tomas Sorcia Jr. was named AstroTurf Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played March 18 through March 24, the Conference office announced today.
Bryant, a sophomore from Lexington, N.C., led the Bulldogs to an undefeated week, including a three-game sweep of Mars Hill in SAC action. He batted .412 for the week with four home runs, a triple, six runs scored and nine RBIs. Five of his seven hits were for extra bases, including belting his conference leading 13th homer of the season.
Sorcia, a junior from Saluda, S.C., was masterful on the mound this week as he led the Wolves to a 9-4 SAC win over Anderson. He threw eight innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts. He took a non-hitter into the seventh inning, and had retired eight consecutive batters prior to giving up his first hit of the day.
This is Bryant's first Player of the Week honor this season, while this the first Pitcher of the Week for Sorcia.
