Newberry's Driggers Named NCBWA Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week
Wingate, N.C.----Georgia College senior Wesley Wommack (Monroe, Ga.) has been named the Southeast Region Player of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), officials announced Tuesday afternoon. Newberry College junior left-hander Quinton Driggers (Pelion, S.C.) is the NCBWA Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week.
Wommack had a monster week, going 10-for-14 (.714) with nine RBIs and five runs over just four games. The senior blasted a pair of two-run home runs, one Friday and one Saturday, each against Florida Tech. His best game came Saturday against the Panthers, going four-for-five with a home run, five RBIs and a run. He slugged 1.214 for the week and had multi-hit games in three of the four along with a stolen base and no strikeouts in 14 at-bats.
Driggers made appearances in three of Newberry's four games last week, helping the Wolves secure a 4-0 record for the week. He earned a pair of saves against Wingate, throwing five total innings, allowing just three hits and no runs with six strikeouts. For the week, Driggers tossed eight scoreless innings, scattering four hits with 12 strikeouts.
