Wingate's Mellett Named NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Week
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior infielder McCann Mellett has been named the Southeast Region Player of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), officials announced Tuesday afternoon. Columbus State University senior left-hander Jalen Latta is the NCBWA Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week.
Mellett led the Bulldogs to a SAC sweep over Anderson last weekend. He hit .692 in the series, going nine-for-13 with two doubles, a home run, seven RBI and five runs scored. Three of his nine hits went for extra bases and he finished the weekend with a .714 on-base percentage and a 1.077 slugging percentage. His big hit of the week was the two-out walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning of Saturday's 7-6 victory.
Latta tossed seven innings of one-hit ball in No. 14 Columbus State's 8-0 win in the series opener at Augusta. The senior struck out a career-high 12 while issuing just one walk in his fourth win of the season. Seven of the first 10 outs he recorded were via a strikeout, sitting down 10 in a row at a point.
