The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week Honors

ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate's McCann Mellett was named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Baseball Player of the Week, while Wingate's Brody McCullough was named AstroTurf Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played during week eight of the 2021 season, the Conference office announced today.

Mellett, a senior second baseman from Charlotte, N.C., led the Bulldogs to a 5-0 record last week, including an 8-2 win over nationally-ranked Mount Olive and a four-game SAC series sweep of Carson-Newman. Against the Eagles, Mellett was nearly flawless at the plate, batting 1.000 in three of the four games. He finished the week with a .647 batting average with four doubles, three home runs, seven RBIs, and 10 runs scored. He had a .727 on-base percentage and a 1.412 slugging percentage.

McCullough, a sophomore right-hander from Lexington, N.C., had two dominant outings last week for the Bulldogs. He picked up the win on the mound in Wingate's 8-2 win over No. 8 Mount Olive and was victorious in his second outing of the week, a 10-3 win over Carson-Newman. Against Mount Olive, he went five innings, allowing just one hit and no runs with five strikeouts. Versus Carson-Newman, McCullough threw five and two-thirds innings, giving up two hits with no runs and four strikeouts. For the week, he threw 10.2 innings allowing three hits and no runs with just one walk, nine strikeouts, and a 0.00 ERA.

This is Mellett's first Player of the Week honor this season, while this marks the second Pitcher of the Week honor for McCullough.
