Newberry's Marine and Wingate's McCullough Named D2 CCA Southeast Region Player and Pitcher of the Year; Thirteen SAC Players Earn All-Region Honors
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The votes have been counted and, reflecting the season, there is an incredible balance on the 2022 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Baseball All-Southeast Region teams.
Sixteen student-athletes from eight different schools earned All-Southeast Region First Team distinction this season.
Brody McCullough of Wingate University was named Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year, while Player of the Year honors went to Braylin Marine of Newberry College. After making the All-Region Second Team as a reliever last season, McCullough made the move to starter and is 8-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 101 strikeouts over 56 1/3 innings this season. He ranks second in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings at 16.14, and allows just 6.23 hits per nine innings, good for 15th in the country. Marine, a shortstop, is hitting .431 this season adding 59 runs, 73 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases. He is first in the country in hits with 90 and owns the 12th most doubles with 21.
Joining these two on the first team were: catcher John Michael Faile, outfielder Marek Chlup, utility non- pitcher Pat Monteith and starting pitcher Reece Fields of North Greenville University, Henry Gibson at first base from Newberry, Seaver King at second base and utility Mitch Farris from Wingate, Todd Mattox at third base from Francis Marion University, outfielder Crews Taylor from the University of North Georgia, outfielder Nick Brassington of Queens University, designated hitter Drew Yniesta and starting pitcher Josh Lanham of Lenoir-Rhyne University, and starting pitcher Jared Donalson of Georgia Southwestern State University.
The South Atlantic Conference (SAC) and the Conference Carolinas each had 13 honorees on the two teams, while the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) had seven.
The first team selections will move on to the All-America ballot. The D2CCA All-America programs honor student-athletes in Division II athletic programs. The mission of the CCA is to encourage and promote Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education.
