Newberry's Marine and Wingate's Farris Named South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Newberry's Braylin Marine was selected as the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Baseball Player of the Week, while Wingate's Mitch Farris was named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played during week nine of the 2023 season, the Conference office announced today. 

Marine, a redshirt senior from Freeport, N.Y., had nine runs, two home runs, and 10 RBIs on the week. He recorded a trio of RBIs in Sunday's doubleheader against Emory & Henry to help the Wolves sweep the Wasps. Marine posted a .526 batting average and a .947 slugging percentage for the week.

Farris, a redshirt junior from Palm Harbor, Fla., struck out 10 more in 8 1/3 innings at Coker, allowing just a run on four hits while walking two to move to 8-0 on the year. Farris is the SAC leader in wins, ERA, strikeouts and strikeouts per 9 innings, leading the nation in strikeouts while ranking second in wins. He has had at least nine strikeouts in all 9 starts, with double-digit strikeouts in 8 of those outings. He had an ERA of 1.08 on the week.
