Wingate's Farris Named NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week
Dallas, Texas----Wingate University redshirt junior left-hander Mitch Farris has picked up another impressive honor, being named the National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The All-American has been named SAC Pitcher of the Week six times this season, earning Region Pitcher of the Week accolades twice.
Farris turned in yet another dominant outing last week, shutting down one of the nation's most prolific offenses as he tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout in a 5-0 win at #5 Newberry. The Wolves rank in the top 15 in the nation in batting average, runs, hits and scoring, but Farris took a no-hitter into the ninth inning on Friday night. He allowed just a pair of singles in the game, striking out 10 without walking a batter to notch his league-best ninth win of the year.
Farris is 9-1 on the year with a 1.25 ERA and 109 strikeouts against just 15 walks in 72 innings of work. Opponents are hitting just .134 against the All-American. Farris has gone at least five innings in all 10 starts this year, striking out at least nine in every outing while hitting double digits in nine of those starts. He has gone at least seven innings in each of his last seven starts, tossing complete games at #7 Lenoir-Rhyne and #5 Newberry, allowing a total of five hits in the two victories.
Farris leads the nation in strikeouts and WHIP, ranking second in wins and hits allowed per nine innings, third in ERA and sixth in strikeout-to-walk ratio and strikeouts per nine innings. In his last 15 starts dating back to last year, Farris is 12-0 in 106 innings of work, posting a 0.76 ERA with 146 strikeouts and 16 walks, allowing just nine runs on 48 hits.
