Newberry's Ford Named NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Week

Salisbury, N.C. ---- Belmont Abbey right-handed pitcher Drew Stegura and Newberry outfielder Donovan Ford were tabbed the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association Southeast Region Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.

Stegura, a sophomore from Lutz, Fla., put together his best career start in a Belmont Abbey uniform by pitching a complete-game, one-hit shutout against third-ranked North Greenville Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader. Stegura matched his career high with seven strikeouts to just two walks as the Abbey earned a 7-0 victory over the Crusaders. Additionally, Stegura pitched the ninth inning and did not allow an earned run in the 7-4 win over Limestone in the first game of a doubleheader sweep against the Saints. 

Ford, a junior outfielder from Greenville, S.C., is currently on an 18-game hitting streak and went 11-for-14 this past week. In the doubleheader sweep against Lenoir-Rhyne to clinch the series win on Saturday, Ford went 7-for-7 in the leadoff spot with an RBI in each game. Ford is currently second in the conference with a .424 batting average and 22 stolen bases so far this season.
