Wingate University’s Brewer Earns National Football Honors for Third Time
Westmont, Ill.----Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette has honored junior place kicker/punter Chris Brewer (Weddington, N.C./Sun Valley HS) as the NCAA Division II special teams "player of the week." Brewer wins the national honor for the third time in the past four weeks. This week's South Atlantic Conference special teams "player of the week," Brewer was also honored as an honorable mention D2Football.com special teams "player of the week" on Monday.
A 6-0, 215 junior kicker from Weddington, N.C., Brewer averaged 44.5 yards per punt on six punts (with a long punt of 51 yards) in a 42-21 home win over North Greenville College Saturday afternoon. Five of his six punts were inside the 20 yard line. Brewer leads the South Atlantic Conference with 11 punts inside the 20. He is averaging 42.7 yards per punt in 2003.
Brewer's kicking was stellar, as he nailed six-of-six extra points against North Greenville. In addition, five of his seven kick-offs against the Crusaders were touchbacks. Thanks to Brewer's kicking and punting, North Greenville's average field position was the NGC 25-yard line, while Wingate's average field position was the Wingate 40-yard line.
In addition to leading the SAC in punts inside the 20, Brewer
leads the league in kick scoring with 8.0 points per game. Brewer
has 32 points (six-of-seven field goals and 14-of-15 extra points)
in four games this season. Brewer has been named the SAC special
teams "player of the week" three times this season.
