Five SAC Teams Earn Spots in Initial NCAA Regional Rankings
Five teams from the South Atlantic Conference have been ranked in the first NCAA Super Region II poll of the 2012 season, the association announced on Monday.
INDIANAPOLIS – Five teams from the South Atlantic Conference have been ranked in the first NCAA Super Region II poll of the 2012 season, the association announced on Monday.
The regional rankings are voted on by the NCAA Division II Football Committee. The polls serve as the official rankings used in the Division II Football Championship selection process.
The SAC's highest-ranked team is Mars Hill at No. 2. The Lions, which earned a bid to last season's NCAA Football Championship, are currently 5-3 overall, with two of the losses coming against Division I competition.
MHC is tied for the top spot in the SAC standings at 4-1 in conference play.
Carson-Newman is fifth in the Super Region II rankings, coming off an impressive 31-10 non-conference win at UNC Pembroke on Saturday. The Eagles have won three in a row to improve their record to 5-2 overall.
Lenoir-Rhyne was voted seventh in the poll, followed by No. 8 Wingate and No. 9 Newberry.
L-R is 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the SAC, including last Saturday's key 34-21 victory at Mars Hill. The Bears have won four straight.
At 4-1 in SAC play, Wingate is tied with Mars Hill for the lead in the conference standings. The Bulldogs are 5-3 overall and have won four of their past five games.
Newberry is also 5-3 overall following last weekend's road victory at Tusculum. The Wolves are 3-2 in the SAC.
Regional rankings will continue to be released each week until championship selections.
