South Atlantic Conference Announces Football Players of the Week, Nov. 7
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games played the tenth week of the season. Wingate quarterback Kyle Johnson was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Tusculum linebacker Brandyn Bartlett was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Meanwhile, Tusculum return man Jay Boyd picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Johnson, a senior from Hickory, N.C., posted a career-best 416 passing yards and five touchdowns through the air to lead the Bulldogs to a 42-39 win over Mars Hill on Nov. 5. He connected on 20-of-29 attempts to finish the contest with a completion percentage of 69 percent. On the ground, Johnson carried the ball two times for 11 yards. His performance helped the Bulldogs put up 631 yards of total offense against the Lions. The award is his first Offensive Player of the Week plaudit this season.
Bartlett, a senior from Dacula, Ga., posted 10 tackles, a pair of sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss in Tusculum's 38-28 win over Catawba on Nov. 5. He recorded six solo tackles as his sacks and tackles for loss put the Catawba Indians in a 25-yard hole. The win marked the Pioneers' first road win at Catawba since the 2010 season and snapped a five-game losing skid on the year. The honor is his first Defensive Player of the Week selection this season.
Boyd, a freshman from Viera, Fla., returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown in the win over Catawba. After the Catawba Indians regained the lead with 1:26 left in the first half, Boyd regained the momentum as he recorded the third-longest kickoff return for a score in Tusculum history. The touchdown sparked the Pioneers to score 17 unanswered points. Boyd finished the contest with two returns for 122 yards. The award is his first Special Teams Player of the Week nod this season.
