South Atlantic Conference Announces Football Players of the Week, Nov. 14
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games played the11th week of the season. Newberry running back Braxton Ivery was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Tusculum linebacker Deres Benn was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Meanwhile, Tusculum kicker Will Tommie picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Ivery, a senior from Florence, S.C., ran the wildcat package for the Wolves and scored the final two touchdowns of the contest to lift Newberry to a 27-22 win over Wingate on Nov. 12. The win gave the red and white the outright 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championship, its first outright title since the 2006 season. He scored on a 10-yard carry and followed with a 49-yard score on consecutive series' late in the fourth quarter. He finished the contest with 74 yards on the ground to go along with four catches and 79 yards. The honor is his first Offensive Player of the Week selection this season.
Benn, a senior from Chattanooga, Tenn., posted a career-best 13 tackles in a 31-30 overtime win against Carson-Newman on Nov. 12. He also forced one fumble, recovered another fumble and added 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception. The win marked the Pioneers' first victory over Carson-Newman since the 2008 season. The honor is his second Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.
Tommie, a sophomore from Greenwood, S.C., scored a career-high 11 points as he went 3-for-3 in field goals and 2-of-2 in extra points in Tusculum's 31-30 overtime win over Carson-Newman. Tommie connected on field goals covering 28, 33 and 46 yards. His 46-yarder tied his career-best. Tommie becomes only the fifth Tusculum kicker to score 100 points in a career (106). On Saturday, he also averaged 64.3 yards on his six kickoffs including one touchback. The honor is his first Special Teams Player of Week plaudit this season.
