The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Football Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf Football Players of the Week for games played during the third week of the 2021 season. Newberry running back Mario Anderson was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week, while Tusculum defensive back Jermaine Witherspoon was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and Wingate kicker McLean Robertson picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Anderson, a sophomore from Summerville, S.C., led the Wolves to a 28-21 upset of No. 5 Lenoir-Rhyne last week. He rushed for a career-high 20 carries, pick up 124 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. He also added a reception for 11 yards to finish the day with 135 total yards of offense.
Witherspoon, a sophomore from Miami, Fla., led the Pioneers to a 24-21 victory over Limestone last week. He recorded a career-high 10 tackles, including eight solo stops, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble, and an interception.
McLean, a senior from Lexington, S.C., had a huge game for the No. 15 Bulldogs as he led them to a 25-3 win over Carson-Newman. He connected on four of five field-goal attempts, including a 40-yard field goal, and was perfect on extra points to account for 13 of Wingate's points. His 13 points tie a Wingate record for points in a game by a kicker.
