Daktronics South Atlantic Men’s Basketball All-Region Teams Selected, Lenoir-Rhyne’s Davis Named to First Team
CLINTON, SC - The 2004-05 Daktronics NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Atlantic All-Region teams were announced today. Four members of the 10-member All-region teams are participating in this weekend's NCAA South Atlantic Regional; a sign of how deep the talent pool is in the region. Each of the three conferences in the region is well represented on the all-region teams. The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) had five selections while the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) had five selections and the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) had two selections.
Three members of the first team will play this weekend. Leading the way is Letheal Cook (Bowie State University) who was named the South Atlantic Region Player of the Year. Cook, one of three returning selections from last year's all-region team, was joined on the first team by repeat selection Yandel Brown (Columbus State University) who also leads the Cougars into postseason play this weekend, Luqman Jaaber of Virginia Union University is the final first team member who will compete in the South Atlantic Regional Tournament. Rounding out the first team was Roman Davis (Lenoir-Rhyne College) and Craig Butts (Clayton College & State University).
Louis McCullough (Francis Marion University), the third repeat selection from 2003-04, leads the way on the second team. He is joined by Jonathan Moore (North Carolina Central University), Lorenzo Lawrence (Armstrong Atlantic State University), and Jeremiah Tinch (Mars Hill College). Rey Luque of Kennesaw State University rounds out the second team and will also lead the defending national champion Owls into this weekend's regional tournament. Davis, a 6-6, 200-pound senior forward from Greensboro, NC (South Stokes High School), earned first-team all-region honors for the second straight year.
Davis led the Bears to a 17-12 record and second-place finish in the South Atlantic Conference and a runner-up finish in the 2005 Food Lion SAC Tournament this year. Davis, who is first in the league in scoring this year (18.5), was also named South Atlantic Conference Player Of The Year, the first player in league history to win the award more than once. Davis also averaged 6.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists while shooting 53.8 percent from the field and 83.1 percent from the free throw line this year and leaves L-R with 1,619 career points, seventh-best all-time and third in school history in blocked shots (147).
Tinch, a 6-8 senior center from Calhoun Falls, SC and a transfer from Montreat College, was a First Team All-Conference selection after leading the SAC in rebounding at 8.8 per game.
All five members of the first team will go on to the Daktronics All-American ballot that will be announced later this month. The following is the 2004-05 Daktronics South Atlantic All-Region first and second teams:
