BREVARD - The Brevard College men's basketball went 0-2 this week, dropping both games against SAC opponents ... Brevard hung with the South Atlantic Conference leading Lenoir-Rhyne Bears for 20 minutes on Wednesday night, however, the Bears used a big second half to pull away from the Tornados for the 77-45 win ... The Bears outscored the Tornados 51-24 in the second half, as the Brevard shot 19.0 percent from the floor, going 4-of-21, while L-R connected on 48.6 percent from the field ... In the first half of play, the Bears jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a jumper by Josh Kindred at the 19:38 mark and did not trail in the opening half although the Tornados kept it close throughout ... The Tornados tied the score on two separate occasions and never trailed by more than eight points in the half, remaining close to the first place Bears by forcing L-R into seven turnovers and scoring eight points in the paint ... Brevard had cut the Bears' lead to 2, 23-21, with 30 seconds to go in the half. However, Lenoir-Rhyne's Marcus Hodge hit a three-pointer with 4.2 seconds remaining in the half to give the Bears a 26-21 lead at the halftime break ... In the first six minutes of the second half, the Bears pounced on the Tornados, as they found their offensive stroke, outscoring the Tornados 18-6 and pushing their lead to 20 points at 47-27 ... The Tornados would not get any closer than 18 points for the remainder of the game, as the Bears picked up their defensive pressure forcing Brevard into 13 second half turnovers and took advantage of the Tornados cold shooting from the floor ... The Tornados points in the second half came by way of the free throw line, as BC hit 14 free throws in the second half, making up over half of their point total for the second 20 minutes of action ... Sophomore forward Jonathan Whitson was the lone Tornado in double figures with 15 points to go along with his team-high seven rebounds, while fellow classmate Shane Galloway added nine points off the bench for Coach Jones' squad ... The men's basketball game between the Brevard College Tornados and the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters on Saturday afternoon was full of excitement as the game went down to the wire, with LMU sneaking away from Boshamer Gymnasium with a thrilling 76-75 overtime victory ... The Tornados found themselves down early, as LMU took a 10 point lead at 22-12 with 11:21 to play in the first half ... The Railsplitters would push the lead up to 12 points only minutes later before the Tornados came fighting back ... A lay-up by sophomore Shane Galloway at the 7:35 mark, cut the LMU lead to 10 at 29-19, but more importantly started a 12-1 run for the Tornados over the next six minutes which was capped off by two made free throws by Andrew Freeman to put BC ahead for the first time in the game, 30-29, with 1:22 remaining in the half ... Two late free throws by Emmanuel Njomo gave the lead back to Lincoln Memorial, as the Railsplitters took the 31-30 advantage into the halftime intermission ... Coming out of the break, the Tornados' Jonathan Whitson hit a lay-up only 12 seconds into the half to have BC regain the lead at 32-31 ... However, the two teams would go-back-and-forth, exchanging the lead over the next six minutes, until a three-point basket by Trey Goins gave the Railsplitters the lead for good until the closing seconds of regulation ... BC's Whitson would cut the Lincoln Memorial lead to one at the 1:01 mark, as he knocked down two foul shots to put the score at 61-60 ... LMU's Beau Brown would hit two free throw shots of his own with 24 seconds on the clock to push the Railsplitters lead back to three at 63-60 ... On the next Tornado offensive possession, Whitson found an open Freeman three feet behind the three-point line, where he launched a shot attempt from long distance, knocking down the three-pointer to tie the score up at 63-63 with only 12 seconds to play ... LMU got the last shot, as Ryan Whitaker too a three-point attempt but it was no good as the two teams headed into overtime ... In overtime, the Tornados jumped out to an early two point lead off of two free throws by Whitson, only to have Lincoln Memorial go on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes of play to take a 71-67 lead with 1:30 to go in the game ... The Tornados did not give in, but rather battled back to take a 75-73 lead off a lay-up by Whitson with 15 seconds remaining in the contest ... The Railsplitters in-bounded the ball to Brown who took a three-point shot attempt ... On the attempt, Brown was able to draw contact and get the whistle as the official called a foul, putting him on the free throw line with six seconds remaining in the game ... Brown would knock down all three shots from the charity stripe to put Lincoln Memorial ahead at 76-75 .... On the ensuing possession, after a BC timeout, the Tornados got the ball to mid-court where contact was made and the ball went bounding off and loose as the horn sounded with LMU holding on to the 76-75 point win ... Whitson led the Tornados with 23 points and 13 rebounds, his fifth double-double of the season ... Andrew Freeman had 16 points, hitting four three-pointers on the day, while freshman Tripp Taraldsen going 5-of-5 from the floor for 10 points off the BC bench ... The Tornados will play host to North Greenville University on Wednesday, February 13, at 8 p.m. and then will remain at home on Saturday afternoon to take on the Bulldogs of Wingate at 4 p.m.
CARSON-NEWMAN - The Carson-Newman Eagles put together a 2-0 week, shooting down North Greenville 93-68 in Tigerville, S.C…Carson-Newman moved to 16-4 with a win on Saturday night over Mars Hill, 103-93…The Eagles have matched their best start under Dale Clayton…C-N was 26-4 in 2001-'02…That team went on to move to 26-4, before losing in the NCAA Tournament to Shaw… C-N shattered the school record for three-pointers made in a single game in the win over North Greenville…C-N hit 20-of-34 from behind the arc, breaking the old record of 17 set against Trevecca in '02-'03…Senior Darren Williams and junior Jesse McMurray each buried five 3s in the win…Seniors Andy Tipton and Scott Williams, along with junior Andrew Johnson each hit two from behind the arc to get in on the record…Carson-Newman shot 60 percent in the win, hitting on 33-of-55 attempts from the floor…(Darren) Williams and McMurray each led the Eagles with 15 points in the win…(Scott) Williams poured in 14 points and Tipton added 10…The Eagles, specifically McMurray, backed up the barrage at North Greenville with another explosive effort against Mars Hill…The Eagles used 62 second half points to get by a game Lions squad…McMurray knocked down 7-of-11 from long range, including 6-of-7 in the second half to lead C-N…He finished with 23 points…C-N turned a 7-point second half deficit into a 12-point lead with a 35-16 run…McMurray, a Gate City, Virginia-native, hit four threes during that stretch…Senior Andy Tipton passed the 1,000-point mark for his career, pumping in 15 points and six boards…Scott Williams added 13 points and six boards…Freshman Kevin Hare had a career high 12 points and five boards…Hare continues to improve, as he's been called on to fill many of the minutes lost with Bobby Guyton's injury…Freshman Cameron Sharp had nine points and a team-high six assists…C-N continues to be one of the nation's highest-scoring teams…The Eagles are averaging 91.3 points per game and are expected to be the nation's #2 team in scoring offense when NCAA stats are released later this week…C-N travels to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, with a chance to avenge a 106-97 loss from earlier in the season…The Eagles will host Tusculum next Saturday in a rematch of an 86-81 win in Greenville in January…That game will be webcast live by the NCAA at http://www.ncaasports.com/broadcast/schedule/divii-basketball
CATAWBA - The Catawba Indians fell twice last week and saw its losing streak reach a season-long four games ... On Wednesday, the Indians dropped a 105-76 decision at Wingate then fell 65-61 at home to Tusculum on Saturday ... The Catawba Indians shot just 35 percent at Wingate and trailed by double-digits most of the way ... Dominick Reid led Catawba with 15 points, while Antonio Houston added 11 and Norman Monroe 10 ... Against Tusculum, Catawba saw a four-point lead evaporate as the Pioneers rallied, taking the lead with 1:11 remaining ... Catawba again shot poorly, making just 36 percent and were a mere 3-of-25 from three-point range ... Monroe led the Tribe with 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds ... Isaac Rose also reached double figures as he scored 11 points ... The 65 points allowed to the Pioneers was the lowest surrendered by Catawba this season after allowing back-to-back 100 points games for the first time since the 1990-91 campaign ... Houston continues to lead Catawba in scoring at 18.4 points per game as the sophomore has moved past 900 career points and should reach 1,000 before the end of the season ... Rob Fields (11.2) and Monroe (10.4) are also averaging double figures, while Reid is tossing in 9.9 points per game ... The Indians hit the road again in mid-week as they travel to Newberry ... Catawba will host Mars Hill for its weekend action ... Catawba lost to Newberry in the first meeting of the season, while it earned a win at Mars Hill.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The No. 23 Lenoir-Rhyne College
men's basketball team (17-3, 9-0) matched its longest win streak in
four years as it defeated Brevard (77-45) and Newberry (81-52) at
Shuford Memorial Gymnasium last Wednesday and Saturday,
respectively … The Bears' 10 consecutive wins matched its
best victory streak since the 2003-04 campaign …
Lenoir-Rhyne holds a two-game lead over Wingate and Carson-Newman
in the league standings … Against Brevard, L-R broke open a
five-point halftime lead (26-21) with a 13-1 run to start the
second half and the rout was on … All told, Lenoir-Rhyne
out-scored Brevard in the second half by a 51-27 margin and was led
by junior guard Josh Rudder (Graham, N.C.) with 19 points …
Senior forward Reggie Bratton (Charlotte, N.C.) added 10 points off
the bench as L-R limited Brevard to just 27 percent (12-of-45)
shooting for the game … Lenoir-Rhyne had a strong second
half against Newberry as well, out-scoring the Indians, 46-27,
after the break to remain undefeated in the SAC standings …
L-R started the run with a 12-2 spurt to end the first half and led
by as many as 34 late in the game … Senior forward Josh
Kindred (Holly Springs, N.C.) led Lenoir-Rhyne with a double-double
(14 points and 15 rebounds) and his rebound total tied a career
high … Clemente Martin scored a game-high 17 points despite
the loss for Newberry … The Bears forced the Indians into 23
turnovers and total 13 steals on the evening … Lenoir-Rhyne
swept the season series from both Brevard and Newberry …
Rudder is just 55 points away from 1,000 for his career while
Bratton (1,266) and Kindred (1,140) already surpassed the mark this
season … Kindred remains second on the Bears' all-time shot
blocking list with 177 … Lenoir-Rhyne is 27-1 in its last 28
South Atlantic Conference Regular Season home games and is 43-4 in
its last 47 contests at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium … The
Bears were ranked third in last week's NCAA Division II South
Atlantic Regional Rankings … Lenoir-Rhyne looks to win its
first 10 conference games of the year this week for the first time
since the 1994-95 campaign when it hosts Carson-Newman (Wednesday
at 8 p.m.) in a SAC showdown before traveling Harrogate, Tenn., to
face Lincoln Memorial Saturday at 8 p.m. … Lenoir-Rhyne
leads the all-time series with both Carson-Newman (23-16) and
Lincoln Memorial (4-1) … The Bears defeated both the Eagles
(106-97 on Jan. 26, in Jefferson City, Tenn.) and the Railsplitters
(77-51 on Jan. 19, in Hickory, N.C.) in this year's first meetings
as well … Carson-Newman, in the midst of a four-game winning
streak, has not lost since L-R beat the Eagles in first game
between the two schools this season.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - Lincoln Memorial trailed throughout most of the
first half of Wednesday night's game with Tusculum College before
taking the lead with 4:02 remaining in the first stanza and
carrying it into the final buzzer to pick up their first South
Atlantic Conference victory of the year with a 70-64 margin
… Although the victory didn't move the Railsplitters out of
eighth place in the conference standings, it did get the monkey off
LMU's back from being the only team in the league without a
conference victory. Railsplitter sophomore Beau Brown led all
scorers with 23 points, while teammate Terry Delaney finished with
19 points and led LMU on the glass with nine rebounds …
Freshman Ryan Whitaker came off the bench to contribute 13 points
one the way to LMU's first conference win as did junior Wadner
Joseph who finished the game with 11 … Tusculum was led by
Jordan Lear and Lavonti Jeter who both chipped in 16 points for the
game. Jeter finished with a game-high 13 rebounds to take top
honors on the glass. Also earning double figures for the Pioneers
was Kyle Moore who came in off the bench to contribute 15 …
The Railsplitters improve to 7-14 on the season and 1-8 in South
Atlantic Conference play while Tusculum falls to 8-13 overall and
2-7 in the conference … The men's basketball game between
the Brevard College Tornados and the Lincoln Memorial University

MARS HILL - Mars Hill lost both of its games last week. The Lions are now 9-12 overall and 3-6 in the SAC … In game one of the week, the Newberry College Indians battled their way to a 60-53 win at Mars Hill College to even their overall record on Wednesday night in Stanford Arena. Newberry was led by Clemente Martin (Freeport, Bahamas), who scored 21 points on the night, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Stephane Bakinde (Yaounde, Cameroon) scored 12 points and added seven rebounds … Mars Hill was led by P.J. Gore's (North Myrtle Beach, SC) 14 points and also had a double-double from Akeene Coakley (Mt. Pleasant, SC) with 10 points and 10 boards … The Lions jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and the Indians were unable to score until Bakinde's jumper with 16:29 on the clock. Mars Hill held the Indians at arm's length for most of the first half, with a Matt Alexander (Atlanta, Ga.) triple at the 4:33 mark giving Newberry its first lead at 18-16 … Newberry took a slim 25-22 lead to the locker room, with 16 of those points coming in the paint. The Indians stretched their lead to eight with a pair of Ty Overmyer (Dawsonville, Ga.) free throws with 14:43 to play. However, the Lions answered with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 32-all with 13:25 left after Coakley hit a shot in the lane … The two sides were unable to pull ahead until a Bakinde jumper with 6:47 gave the Indians the lead for good … Newberry was able to extend the lead to as many as 11 down the stretch and earned the 60-53 victory … In game two of the week, the Carson-Newman Eagles used 62 second-half points to overcome a five-point halftime deficit and run by Mars Hill Saturday Night at Holt Field House, 103-93 … Junior Jesse McMurray hit 7-of-11 from behind the arc and finished with 23 points to lead the Eagles. McMurray hit seven triples in the second half … Senior Andy Tipton added 15 points for the Eagles … Carson-Newman (16-4, 7-2 SAC) trailed at the half 46-44, and fell behind by seven in the second half at 68-61, before McMurray got going. The Gate City, Virginia-native reeled off three triples to lead the Eagles during a 35-16 surge … Mars Hill had five players in double-figures, led by Jamarl Glen (District Heights, MD) with 23 points. Glen also had nine boards. Jabreel Moton (Cincinnati, OH) and P.J. Gore (North Myrtle Beach, SC) each finished with 16 as well … Scott Williams added 13 for the Eagles, while Kevin hare picked up some of the slack for an injured Bobby Guyton, finishing with a career-high 12 points and five rebounds … MHC will host Lincoln Memorial on February 13 at 8 p.m. in Stanford Arena. And then play at Catawba Colleg on February 16 at 4 p.m.
NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Indians enter a crucial week in the battle for fourth place in the South Atlantic Conference after splitting a pair of road games with Mars Hill and Lenoir-Rhyne last week… Newberry's record now stands at 10-11 overall and 4-6 in SAC action… On Wednesday, the Indians pulled out a tough 60-53 decision at Mars Hill behind 21 points and eight rebounds from Clemente Martin… The game was the first the Indians played without point guards Vytautas Valiulis and Keith Marshall, both who were out with injuries but are slated for returns this week… Matt Alexander ran the floor for all 40 minutes in what became a defensive battle… The Indians took a slim 25-22 lead into the halftime break… After Newberry took an eight-point lead, Mars Hill tied it up with an 8-0 run, making it 32-all with 13:25 remaining… But the Indians never gave up and took a lead as large as 11 points down the stretch to earn the season split with the Lions… On Saturday, the No. 23 Lenoir-Rhyne Bears showed why they are the class of the South Atlantic Conference, extending a 10-point lead to as many as 34 to beat NC, 81-52… It was Newberry's worst loss of the season, despite a 17-point performance from Martin… The Indians hung around for the early parts of the second half, but a 16-0 L-R run put the game out of reach… L-R was 21-of-23 from the charity stripe, while the Indians were only afforded 10 opportunities for free throws… After the split, the Indians hold a half game lead over Catawba and Mars Hill (both at 3-6) for the crucial fourth spot in the league… Newberry will face another tough conference battle on Wednesday, as the Indians host Catawba College for an 8 p.m. tipoff that could prove to be the deciding factor in who gets home court advantage in three weeks… The game expects to see Martin, who has hit double figures in 20 of the Indians' 21 games this season, hit the 1,000-point mark for his career… His total currently stands at 993 points… Saturday will see the Indians take a short break from SAC play, as they hit the road to take on the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College… LMC is 4-18 overall and 3-13 in Conference Carolinas play, with a matchup against Pfeiffer in between Saturday's tangle with the Indians.
TUSCULUM - The Tusculum men's basketball team (9-13, 3-7 SAC) went 1-1 last week in its two South Atlantic Conference road games… The Pioneers dropped a 70-64 decision at Lincoln Memorial, but bounced back with a 65-61 win at Catawba… Senior Lavonti Jeter led the Pioneers with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the LMU game… Senior Jordan Lear added 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while sophomore Kyle Moore finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench… Rookie Robert Troutman was perfect on the night going 3-for-3 from the floor, including a three-pointer and 2-of-2 shooting at the foul line for his nine markers... Tusculum snapped a six-game losing streak with a four-point win over Catawba as TC completes the season sweep… Down 61-60, Lear converted a pair of free throws with 1:11 remaining to put Tusculum ahead for good. After a Catawba turnover, the Pioneers got two more free throws from junior Ryan Troutman with 21 seconds left for a 64-61 lead… Catawba would miss on a three-point attempt in the final seconds and sophomore Darren Hobbs iced the game by making the first of two free throws with just 3.6 seconds to go… Catawba held the biggest lead of the final half at six points, the last at 45-39 with 14:21 to go… Tusculum would score nine straight points to grab the lead on a three-pointer by Lear… Catawba came back to grab a 54-50 edge before the late Pioneer rally… Lear paced Tusculum with 24 points, including 14 of the Pioneers' 29 first half points… Moore and Jeter each had 11 points, with Jeter adding eight rebounds… Tusculum now leads the all-time series over Catawba, 12-11… Lear is one of 19 players in recorded school history to score 1,000 points… He enters this week's action with 1,444 points to his credit (8th in school history)… Lear has scored in 76 straight games and in 102 of his 103 career contests… Tusculum has made a 3-point field goal in 575 consecutive games… Tusculum head coach Jim Boone enters this week with 357 career victories, which are 35th most amongst active NCAA Division II coaches… Tusculum will host Wingate on Wednesday and travel to in-state foe Carson-Newman on Saturday.
WINGATE - The Wingate University men's basketball team shot 60.3 percent from the field as they defeated the Catawba College Indians 106-75 Wednesday night in Cuddy Arena. With the victory, Wingate improves to 16-5 overall and 7-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Catawba contest was Wingate's only action last week … Five players hit double-digits for the Bulldogs. Wingate senior forward/guard Sean Barnette led the way with 19 points. Senior guard Sam Holmes added 17 points, matching his season-high. Sophomore guard Brandon Plummer chipped in with 12 points … Redshirt senior forward/center Bryan Grier had 11 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the hosts. Junior forward Kenny Villines was the fifth Bulldog in double figures with 10 points to go along with eight rebounds. Thirteen different Bulldogs scored; while nine had at least five points … Wingate started strong, outscoring the Indians 26-8 in the game's opening moments. Barnette and Holmes had five points each in the stretch. The Bulldogs would take a 39-19 lead on a jumper from redshirt sophomore forward David Johnson (Raleigh, N.C.) at the 6:02 mark … The Indians would put together an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 12 at 39-27. Wingate would end the half on a 17-9 run. A jumper from junior forward Tommy Coles (Danville, Va.) put the Bulldogs up by 56-34 with 49 seconds left. Catawba answered with a lay-up to cut the lead to 20 at the break … Wingate started the second half in a similar fashion, extending the lead to 30 at the 13:29 mark. A lay-up from Grier capped the opening run, making it 73-43 Bulldogs … The lead would never get below 26. The Bulldogs largest lead was 37 at the 4:45 mark, when Larry Staley (Charlotte, N.C.) knocked down a jumper to make it 98-61 … The Bulldogs were 44-for-73 (60.3 percent) from the field on the night. They hit seven-of-13 from beyond the arc (53.8 percent). Catawba shot 35.4 percent (28-for-79) from the field and 33.3 percent (six-for-18) from three-point range. Wingate held a 48-43 rebounding edge, while outscoring the Indians 58-34 in the paint.
