BREVARD - The young BC men's basketball team lost two close games last week, falling late in both contests to fall to 3-21 on the season ...The Tornados dropped their second straight last second overtime loss on Wednesday night, falling to the Crusaders of North Greenville 61-59 in extra time in front of a packed out Boshamer Gymnasium crowd ... In the first half, North Greenville shot 50 percent from the floor, connecting on 11-of-22 attempts, and went 3-3 from the free throw line to lead for all but 33 seconds in the first 20 minutes of play ... After the Tornados took a 5-4 lead at the 16:24 mark on a three-point basket by forward Joseph Chilton, the Crusaders went on a 11-2 run over the next five minutes of play to take a 15-7 lead ... Brevard battled back to take a 19-18 lead on a lay-up by Radosav Babic with 6:31 to go in the half. However, that basket was the Tornados last of the half, as they went ice cold from the floor and were outscored by the Crusaders 10-0 to trail 28-19 at the halftime break ... Coming out of the halftime intermission, the Tornados brought a new intensity to the floor, going on a 7-0 run to start the period, capped off by lay-up by Jonathan Whitson to cut the North Greenville lead to two at 28-26 ... After the Crusaders went scoreless in the opening four minutes, NGU found their stroke pushing their lead back up to six at 32-26 ... BC did not go away though, as they battled back to take a 34-33 lead on a jumper from about four feet out by sophomore Shane Galloway, giving the Tornados their first lead since early in the first half ... At the 5:47 mark, North Greenville's Austin Randel hit two free throws to give the Crusaders a 42-40 lead ... After a BC basket by Tripp Taraldsen tied it up at 42-42, the Crusaders again regain the lead on a Nathan Wilson lay-up, holding on to a three-point lead with until 13 seconds to go ... After a called time-out by Brevard with 13.1 on the clock and down 52-49, the Tornados came out off the huddle looking for a quick basket ... Guard Cody Siniard got the inbounds pass and hit Andrew Freeman on the left wing where he was covered and threw the ball back to the top of the key, finding a wide open Joseph Chilton who hit the shot from long range to tie the score up at 52-52 ... With 6.1 remaining in the game, North Greenville took the ball the length of the court and got two shots at the win with the last shot bounding off to the right as the horn sounded sending the game to overtime ... In the overtime, the Crusaders pulled ahead 54-52 and stayed ahead until three quick points by BC's Galloway put the Tornados ahead 57-56 with 1:15 to go in the game ... North Greenville answered with a jumper of their own to put them back on top 58-57 with 48 seconds on the clock ... On the ensuing possession, Siniard was fouled trying to set a screen and walked up to the charity stripe for two foul shots ... Siniard sank the first and then the second to but BC back on top 59-58 with 32 seconds remaining ... After a North Greenville timeout, the Crusaders scored on an open lay-up by Kyler Vitko to put the visiting Crusaders back on top, 60-59 with 18.0 seconds on the clock ... The Crusaders made a strong defensive stand on the next BC possession, regaining the possession of the ball and drawing an immediate foul from the Tornados, putting senior Adam Griggs on the line with 2.7 in the game ... NGU's Griggs hit the first foul shot and missed the second, leaving the score at 61-59 with 2.1 seconds left in the game ... The Tornados tried a last second full court pass to get off a quick shot in the final 2.1 seconds, but to no avail, ultimately falling 61-59 ... Brevard had four players in double-digit scoring, led by Whitson's 13 point performance. Chilton and Siniard had 12 points apiece, while Galloway came off the bench with 10 points ... The Brevard College men's basketball team used a big second half against Wingate University on Saturday afternoon, to battle back into the game before falling to the pre-season SAC favorites, 87-77 at Boshamer Gymnasium ... The entire 40 minutes of play was a game of runs, as Wingate jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the Tornados and never trailed for the remainder of the game, holding off the Tornados down the stretch to seal the 10 point win ... The Tornados battled back to cut the lead to five, at 27-22, as forward Joseph Chilton hit a three-pointer from the top of the key at the 8:28 mark ... Yet Wingate made another run to close out the last eight minutes of the half, outscoring BC 21-11 in the closing minutes to take a 48-33 lead into the halftime break ... While the Tornados shot 41.7 percent from behind the three-point arc in the first half, connecting on 5-of-12, the Bulldogs went 6-of-10 from long distance and shot 52.8 percent from the floor overall to help them hold of BC and maintain their lead in the first 20 minutes of play ... After a lay-up by Siniard started off the second half, the Tornados again started off slow, falling behind 61-39 with 16:44 to go in the game ... Yet Coach Jones' squad did not go away, as they continued to hang around with the Bulldogs cutting the lead to as low as 10 on a number of occasions over the next 14 minutes of play ... The Tornados finally cut the Wingate lead to single digits with 1:56 remaining in the game, as two made free throws by sophomore Jonathan Whitson cut the lead to eight points at 81-73 ... After two missed free throws by Wingate on the next possession, the Tornados Whitson came through again, this time hitting a lay-up down low to cut the lead to six with 1:29 to play ... However, that was as close as Brevard would get, as Wingate's seniors and pre-season all-conference performers Sean Barnette and Bryan Grier scored the final six points down the stretch for the Bulldogs to seal the 87-77 win ... Leading the way for Brevard was sophomore Jonathan Whitson's game-high 29 points and 15 rebounds, his fifth double-double on the season ... Forward Joseph Chilton had 14 points, while fellow junior Sean Ferretti had a season-high 12 points on the game ...
