BREVARD - The Tornados went 2-0 on the week, defeating Erskine on the road in triple overtime on Monday, 91-81, and returning to Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday to defeat SAC opponent Carson-Newman, 67-65 ... On Monday, Josh Roper set a new Brevard scoring single-game scoring record and tied for sixth all-time on the SAC single game scoring list with 41 points against the Flying Fleet, including drilling the game-tying three-pointer as time expired in the second overtime to lead the Tornados to victory ... The junior guard scored 26 points in regulation and added the other 15 in the overtime periods, going 14-21 from the floor and 6-9 from behind the arc and added five assists, five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots to hit totals ... Shane Galloway added 10 points and 10 rebonds for the first double-double of his career and Darin Dellinger and Nathan Whitmire each exceeded the double-digit mark as the Tornados swept the season series with Erskine ... With time running out in regulation, Victor Street, Jr. connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key to send it into overtime ... In the first overtime, Erskine built a three-point lead on a layup by Marko Latinovic and a free throw by Dejan Nedelkovski, but the Tornados rallied as Roper drove in for a layup with six seconds remaining to put Brevard up 67-65 ... Brandon Wright responded on the other end with a pair of free throws to send the game to a second overtime ... Erskine went up 79-76 with 2.6 seconds remaining in the second overtime following a Brevard technical foul, but on the inbounds play a Flying Fleet offensive foul gave the Tornados one last chance and Roper caught the inbounds pass, split the double team and connected on a one-handed attempt from behind the arc to send it to a second overtime ... In the third overtime, the Tornados outscored the Flying Fleet 12-2 to seal the win ... On Wednesday, Jonathan Whitson led four Tornados in double figures with 14 points, while pulling down nine rebounds and blocking two shots ... Sam Carlisle added 13 points and Roper added 11 points, four rebounds and five assists as Brevard won their fifth SAC game of the season ... Whitmire added 10 points as the Tornados opened the game with the slight 17-16 lead before Carson-Newman went up 30-20 on their way toward cruising to a 36-31 halftime lead ... The Tornados opened up a five point lead at 45-40 with 15:18 remaining, as the teams swapped leads late in the contest ... Brevard used a late 13-2 run capped off by a Carlisle put back to put the score at 67-61, but Carson-Newman came back with a layup and a pair of free throws by Darron Maxtion to put the game back within two but a miss by Cameron Sharp, who scored a game-high 28 points in the contest, ended the game in favor of the Tornados ... Brevard is back in action this week on Wednesday, traveling to take on Newberry, before returning home on Saturday to host Mars Hill.
CARSON-NEWMAN - The Carson-Newman Eagles went 1-1 on the week as they fell at Brevard, 67-65, on Wednesday before rebounding to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne, 66-61, on Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse…The Eagles are now 8-9 on the season and 3-4 in the conference…C-N opened the week with a 67-65 loss to Brevard at Boshamer Gymnasium despite a career-high 28 points from sophomore guard Cameron Sharp…Sharp was 10-of-16 from the floor, including 7-of-10 from behind the arc, in 39 minutes of action…The Eagles shot 51.1 percent (24-of-47) as a team, including 50 percent (12-of-24) from 3-point range…Senior point guard Jordan Dixon tossed in 12 points and dished out seven assists in the loss…Sharp carried the Eagles in the first half as he tossed in 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including five 3-pointers…Brevard held a one-point lead nine minutes into the contest before Sharp drained a 3-pointer at the 10:42 mark to spark a 13-4 C-N run that gave the Eagles a 30-20 advantage…The Tornados battled back to trim C-N's lead to three points, but C-N forward Tray Okoth answered at the other end with a jumper to give the Eagles a 36-31 lead heading into the locker room…C-N didn't hold onto its lead for long after the break, as Brevard opened the second half with a 14-4 run to take a 45-40 lead with 15:18 remaining…The Eagles later regained the lead by going on a 19-9 run capped off by another Sharp 3-pointer that gave C-N a 59-54 advantage with 6:12 remaining…But Brevard outscored the Eagles 13-6 to close out the game…The Eagles bounced back to pick up a win at home on Saturday, as Dixon and Sharp netted 17 and 15 points, respectively, to lead C-N to a 66-61 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne at Holt Fieldhouse…The Eagles shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) for the game, including 52 percent in the second half…Sharp turned in another solid outing for the Eagles, going 6-of-9 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and dishing out five assists…Sharp shot 64 percent (16-of-25) from the floor during the week…Sophomore forward Quinche Dowdell added 14 points and seven rebounds for C-N, while Okoth tossed in 10 points…The teams were deadlocked at 31-31 heading into the locker room, but Lenoir-Rhyne outscored the Eagles 10-5 during the first five minutes of the second half to build a 41-36 lead…The Eagles fought back to take a 42-41 lead on a Dixon layup with 12:47 remaining…The Eagles and Bears then battled through six ties and five lead changes before C-N went ahead for good at 64-61 on a 3-pointer by Sharp with 2:08 left…C-N returns to the court on Wednesday at home in a SAC matchup against Catawba. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
CATAWBA - The Catawba men split a pair of league games last week ... The Indians defeated league-leading Lincoln Memorial 88-85 midweek, but suffered a 94-88 double-overtime defeat to Newberry on Saturday to keep the Indians from sharing the top spot in the SAC ... In a frantic finish vs. LMU, Donald Rutherford converted a three-point play on a breakaway with two seconds left for the win ... LMU had tied the game just two seconds earlier on a three-pointer before the quick Catawba outlet beat the defense up the court ... a late 9-0 run proved to be key in the tight battle ... Rutherford put Catawba up with 5:03 left and Antonio Houston followed with five straight points for an 80-73 edge ... LMU cut the lead to a single point with 55 ticks remaining then Dominick Reid beat the shot-clock buzzer with 17 seconds left to set up the final sequence ... Houston poured in 29 points for the Indians on 8-of-12 shooting with four three-pointers ... Rob Fields also canned four from long range and finished with 23 points ... Rutherford added 17 points ... The Indians could not find the mark from long distance in the loss to Newberry ... Catawba was just 6-of-29 from behind the arc and could not force Newberry from its zone defense ... Despite trailing for much of the game, Catawba rallied from a 65-57 deficit in the final five minutes of regulation ... Donzell Williams gave Catawba a 69-68 lead with 1:07 to play before Newberry tied the game on a free throws with 55 seconds to go ... Newberry had two chances to win in regulation, but Rutherford blocked the final attempt in the land to force the extra time ... A three-pointer by Fields and a steal and layup by Williams had Catawba up 79-74 in the first OT, but a missed three-pointer and a turnover gave Newberry the opportunity to come back and the visitors forced another period on a three-pointer with four seconds remaining ... Fields had the Indians up 83-82 with 2:54 to go, but Catawba went two minutes without scoring as Newberry began to take over ... Fields got the Indians within 89-85 with 51 seconds remaining, but Newberry iced the issue on a three-point play with 42 ticks left ... Fields led Catawba with 22 points ... Rutherford had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds ... Houston added 16 and Williams equaled his career-high with 14 ... Catawba made just two fields goals over the first 11 minutes of the game ... The Indians held a 49-41 edge on the boards, but committed 20 turnovers ... Catawba will hit the court just once this week, traveling to Carson-Newman on Wednesday ... The Indians are idle over the weekend before beginning the second half of league play.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne University men's basketball team (3-14, 1-6) lost its sixth straight game last Saturday when it fell to Carson-Newman by a 66-61 score at Holt Fieldhouse … Sophomore guard Jon Hathock (Concord, N.C.) finished with a career-high 15 points while junior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) added 15 points as well despite the setback … Carson-Newman's Jordan Dixon led all scorers with 17 points and was one of four Eagle players to score in double figures in the victory … Carson-Newman's Cameron Sharp (15 points) hit the game-winning three-pointer with 2:08 remaining with the score tied at 61 … Blackmon, who leads the team in scoring (20.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg), currently has 905 points for his L-R career … Freshman guard Spenser Sydney (Lincolnton, N.C.), with 10 points against Carson-Newman Saturday, stretched his double-digit scoring streak to four contests … Blackmon, meanwhile, has scored in double figures in every game this year and 18 dating back to last season … L-R plays at Wingate (Wednesday at 8 p.m.) and Tusculum (Saturday at 4 p.m.) this week in a pair of South Atlantic Conference contests … Lenoir-Rhyne leads the all-time series with both Wingate (43-25) and Tusculum (17-12) … The Pioneers defeated the Bears by a 74-47 score on January 2, 2010, in Hickory, N.C., in this season's first contest between the two schools.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - A long pass and an old-fashioned three-point play enabled the Catawba College Indians to eke out the 88-85 win over the Railsplitters Wednesday evening … LMU (14-3, 5-2 SAC) was led by Desmond Johnson's 22 points … Brandon Armstrong added in 20 points and a game-high 9 rebounds … D'Mario Curry scored 13 points … Cameron Carden added in 12 points … The Railsplitters outrebounded Catawba 39-29 … There were eight ties and 16 lead changes in the contest … Six of those lead changes came in the first half … The Railsplitters grabbed an early 4-2 lead on a free throw by Johnson, but then Catawba went on a 10-2 run to open up a lead … They would lead by as much as eleven points before LMU mounted a comeback to take the 34-33 lead on a Johnson jumper with two minutes to go in the half … Rob Fields then hit a basket to give Catawba the 35-34 lead … Armstrong then pulled LMU ahead 37-35 with 1:43 to go with a three-pointer … A free throw by Donald Rutherford and a basket by Antonio Houston gave Catawba the 38-37 lead at the half … The second half saw both teams grab a 5-6 point lead and then give it up … Late in the game, Reid gave Catawba the 85-82 lead with 17 seconds to go … LMU's Carden then hit a three-pointer to tie the game with four seconds to go … Catawba was then able to get the ball in quickly before the LMU defense could get completely set … Rutherford hit the lay-up following a long pass from Dominick Reid and was fouled with 2 seconds to go … He hit the free throw to seal the 88-85 win for the Indians … On Saturday afternoon, LMU's nine game home winning streak came to an end when Mars Hill came into the Turner Arena and knocked off the LMU men 96-92 in overtime for their second loss this week … The Railsplitters were pushed back on their heels early in the contest when the Lions took the lead and held on it most of the first half … Mars Hill led by as many as six points on two occasions in the first half … The Lions took a 40-36 lead into the locker room at the intermission … The second half saw more of the same, with LMU and Mars Hill trading the lead several times … Although the Lions led most of the way, the Railsplitters battled in the late minutes of the second stanza … LMU tied the game on a jumper by Brandon Armstrong with 47 seconds to play … Neither team scored throughout the remainder of regulation … The game was sent to overtime tied at 79 … In the overtime period, again it was Mars Hill that took the upper hand on a jumper in the paint by forward Dion Malachi with 4:42 to go … LMU regained the lead briefly when Cameron Carden hit his only 3-pointer of the night … Mars Hill took the lead by force when Danny Sanders hit his only 3-pointer of the night with 2:29 remaining in overtime … LMU couldn't overcome the Mars Hill lead and the Lions picked up the win … LMU was 18-36 from the free throw line for 50 percent on the night … LMU also turned the ball over 23 times … They fall to 14-4 overall and 5-3 in South Atlantic Conference play … The Railsplitters were paced by point-guard Brandon Armstrong who had a team-high 19 points … Desmond Johnson came off the bench to score 17 points and pull down 15 boards … Stuart Miller scored all 16 of his points in the second half … D'Mario Curry and Brandon O'Brien each had a double-double; O'Brien had 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Curry had 13 points and 10 boards … LMU will be in action Wednesday night when they travel to Bristol, Tennessee to take on King College at 8:00 p.m. …. LMU and King squared off earlier in the year with the Railsplitters winning in Harrogate 73-66 on December 15.
MARS HILL - Mars Hill had a huge week winning two league games that propelled them into first place in the SAC … Danny Sanders was a big part of their success. The senior from Shelby, N.C., averaged 27.5 points and four steals per game while connecting on 53.7 percent of his field goal attempts. Danny leads the SAC in scoring and steals … In the first game of the week, Mars Hill put away Wingate early in the second half and cruised to an 89-73 win in men's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Stanford Arena … The Lions have now won three of the previous four meetings against the Bulldogs … A thunderous two-handed slam by Dion Malachi (Shelby, N.C.) gave Mars Hill a 12-7 lead at the 14:20 mark in the first half, but Jesse Jackson (Fayetteville, N.C.) got in on the dunk party with a follow slam on the next possession … Leading 12-9, Mars Hill went on a 14-3 run. Cody King (Enka, N.C.) and Antonio Lyerly (Newton, N.C.) hit back-to-back three pointers in the span of 36 seconds to give the Lions an 18-12 lead seven minutes into the game … Danny Sanders (Shelby, N.C.) then threw down a one-handed jam midway through the first half and finished off the spurt with back-to-back treys to give Mars Hill a 26-12 advantage … Wingate cut the deficit to single digits at 32-24 off a short bank shot in the paint by Bradley Van Staalduinen (Pantego, N.C.) with 4:42 left in the first half, but Malachi threw down another highlight dunk with just under two minutes remaining to give Mars Hill a 13-point lead, 39-26 … Mars Hill took a 42-30 lead into halftime. Sanders had 18 points in the first half … In the first 13 minutes of the game, Sanders had as many points (16) as the entire Wingate team … The Lions blew the game open in the second half with a 22-4 run, including a 12-0 run in the first four minutes. During the run, Stoney Polite (Morganton, N.C.) had eight points, and Sanders threw down another dunk from the baseline to raise the Lion lead to 24 points, 54-30 … The Bulldogs went scoreless until Larry Staley (Charlotte, N.C.) converted a fastbreak layup. Mars Hill grabbed its largest lead of the game, 64-34, off a fastbreak layup by Julian Mack (Morganton, N.C.) … At the midway point of the second half, Brittion Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) threw an alley-oop to Malachi to make the score 68-42 in favor of the Lions. Leading 75-49, Wingate went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 20 points, 75-55, off a layup by Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) with 6:46 left in the game. However, the Bulldogs could get no closer … Sanders finished with a game-high 26 points and four steals. Malachi pumped in 18 points and seven rebounds. Although the Railsplitters were able to extend the lead to two on a free throw shot by Stuart Miller at the 2:37 mark, Mars Hill took the lead when Sanders hit his only 3-pointer of the night with 2:29 remaining in overtime … A aggressive Lion defense led to 23 LMU turnovers that helped the Lions win a tough road contest … Sanders led all scorers with 29 points, 18 of which came in the second half. He still leads the SAC in scoring averaging 24.4 points per game … Stoney Polite (Morganton, N.C.) knocked down 18 points while Malachi came off the bench to contribute 12 while Brittion Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) added 11 … MHC will return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Greeneville, Tenn., to face Tusculum College in Pioneer Arena. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. The Lions will then travel to Brevard for a 4 p.m. tip-off on Saturday.
NEWBERRY - The week started with a lopsided loss at home and ended with a dramatic double overtime road win as the Newberry College men's basketball team went 1-1 last week… Newberry now stands at 7-12 overall and 2-5 in the South Atlantic Conference… On Wednesday, Newberry lost at home to Tusculum, 73-58… Ray Robinson led Newberry with 22 points and 8 rebounds, while Aaron Edwards scored 10 points… On Saturday, Newberry beat Catawba in double overtime on the road, 94-88… Edwards led all scorers with a career-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting, once scoring 11 consecutive points in the second half… Coleman Young was a sparkplug off of the bench with a career-high 20 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and making 4-of-5 three-point attempts and making 8-of-9 at the free throw line… Robinson fell just short of a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds... Robinson scored 20 points for the second straight game… Jeremee Davis had one of the best performances by a Newberry point guard in recent memory, dishing out 11 assists before fouling out late in the second half… It was the first time a Newberry player had double digit assists since Vytautas Valiulis had 10 assists at Wingate on December 5, 2007… The last time a Newberry player had 11 assists was when Elijah Frasier dished out 12 assists against Lees-McRae on November 19, 2004… Newberry has played 156 games since that performance… Stephane Bakinde rounded out Newberry's double digit scorers with 14 points and seven rebounds… Newberry plays at home twice next week, hosting league-leading Brevard for an 8 p.m. tipoff Wednesday to complete the first trip through the SAC loop… Newberry hosts Carson-Newman at 2 p.m. Saturday… Carson-Newman won the first matchup this season, 85-54.
TUSCULUM - The Tusculum Pioneers (10-8, 4-3 SAC) recorded a pair of South Atlantic Conference road victories last week at Newberry and Wingate… In Tusculum's 73-58 win at Newberry, senior guard Kyle Moore scored 25 points, while becoming the league's all-time leader in career three-point field goals made… Moore shot 9-of-14 from the floor, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc… His fourth trey of the night was his 245th of his career, surpassing the previous SAC best by Lenoir-Rhyne's John Wadsworth, who made 244 three-pointers from 1992-96… It was also Moore's 1,500th-point in a Tusculum uniform, making him one of only nine players in school history to achieve that feat… Senior guard Jimmy Boone added 13 points, including three 3-pointers, while sophomore guard Justin Steigerwald established career-bests with 12 points and nine assists… Tusculum also established a new school single-game record, shooting 9-of-14 from three-point territory (64.3%)… The Pioneers finished the game shooting 62.8 percent from the floor, including 15-of-22 in the first half (68.2%)… In Tusculum's 70-68 win at Wingate, junior forward Rob Troutman's jumper with 8.9 seconds left proved to be the game-winner… Troutman also deflected an in-bounds lob pass to the rim with one second left to preserve the win… Troutman finished the game with nine points, along with seven rebounds and six assists… Moore led the Pioneer scoring with 16 points, while Boone added 15 markers, including 3-of-4 shooting from three-point land… Senior forward Josh Bennett accounted for 13 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the foul line… Bennett also finished with 13 points in the victory… The contest was a thriller as the game was tied 14 times and the lead changed hands 17 times… Tusculum's win at Wingate ended a four-year drought at WU's Cuddy Arena… It also marked the first time this year that TC rallied from a halftime deficit… Moore has made 247 three-pointers in his three seasons at Tusculum, which are second in school history, 80 behind Shane Banks' 327 from 1996-2000… Moore has also tallied 1,521 points in his 77 games in a TC uniform, which is seventh in school history… He needs 30 points to surpass former All-SAC forward Jordan Lear for sixth place (1,550 - 2004-08)… Tusculum has made a three-point field goal in 629 consecutive games… Tusculum limited its opponents to under 60 points on 10 occasions this season (8-2 record in those games)… Boone has scored in double-digits eight times this season (TC is 7-1 in those games)… Tusculum will host SAC co-leader Mars Hill on Wednesday to close out the first half of the league season… The Pioneers will welcome Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday for Jam the Gym Day (free admission for all fans)… Tusculum defeated L-R earlier this month, 74-47 in Hickory, N.C.
WINGATE - The Wingate University men's basketball team dropped two tough South Atlantic Conference decisions last week. Tusculum College hit the game-winning shot with nine seconds left and the Pioneers survived two Wingate attempts to tie in the waning moments Saturday, picking up a 70-68 victory over the Bulldogs in Cuddy Arena ... For Wingate, sophomore guard Jaime Vaughn scored a career-high 26 points to lead all scorers Saturday. Vaughn hit nine-of-14 field goals. He was a perfect six-for-six from three-point land. Freshman forward Quan Alexander added 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks for the Bulldogs ... The wild contest featured 14 ties and 17 lead changes. The second half was tied nine times and included seven lead changes. Wingate had two chances to force overtime in the final seconds. Vaughn missed a jumper with three seconds left. Tusculum got the rebound, but a traveling call with exactly one second to play gave the Bulldogs another chance ... Wingate called time out and Bulldog head coach Brian Good designed a set play for freshman center Odell Turner. Freshman point guard Ethan Kincaid threw a lob towards the hoop, but Turner missed the lay-up at the buzzer ... The Bulldogs led 41-38 at intermission, thanks to 19 first-half points from Vaughn. The Pioneers led 28-21 with exactly 10 minutes remaining in the first half ... Wingate finished the opening stanza with a 20-10 run to take the three-point halftime lead. Vaughn contributed 11 points to the flurry, including three baskets from downtown. Both teams shot 56.5 percent from the floor in the first half (13-of-23). Wingate hit five-of-eight three-pointers in the first 20 minutes (62.5 percent), while Tusculum made four-of-eight from downtown in the same time frame (50 percent) ... On the evening, the Bulldogs hit 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the floor. Wingate outrebounded Tusculum 31-24, thanks to 12 rebounds from Turner. The Myers Park High School product had seven offensive rebounds. The Pioneers fought for seven offensive rebounds in the second half, converting them into seven crucial second-chance points. TC had only one offensive board in the first frame ... Turner added nine points for Wingate, while senior guard Larry Staley contributed eight points. Five players entered the game averaging double-figure points for the Bulldogs ... Mars Hill College topped Wingate 89-73 Wednesday night in Stanford Arena. For the Bulldogs, Alexander had 13 points. Classmate Turner contributed 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Chase Smith and freshman forward Jesse Jackson added eight points each for the visitors ... Mars Hill took the lead for good at 7-5 and never looked back. The Lions hit a lay-up with 12:27 remaining, putting Mars Hill up 64-34. The 30-point bulge was the hosts' biggest lead of the night ... Wingate didn't quit, cutting the deficit to 75-55 on a Turner inside hoop with 6:46 to play. The Bulldogs could not get over the hump, as the Lions kept the margin above 20 until the waning moments. A Jackson follow dunk with 17 seconds left and a lay-up by sophomore guard Tracy Parks at the buzzer pulled Wingate within 16 and settled the final margin ... In the first half, Danny Sanders put the Lions on his shoulders by posting 18 markers in 17 minutes. Sanders hit seven-of-10 field goals in the opening frame; his teammates managed only four-of-19 shooting from the floor. Wingate hit 40 percent (12-of-30) of its first half shots. Mars Hill led 42-30 at the break. Twenty-four players hit the scoring column, as 12 Lions and 12 Bulldogs put their names in the box score Wednesday ... Wingate's shooting improved after halftime, as the Bulldogs connected on 45.5 percent of their second-half attempts (15-of-33). For the game, Wingate hit 42.9 percent from the floor (27-of-63). The Bulldogs dialed long distance twice, making two-of-10 three-point field goals (20 percent). The two teams combined for 43 turnovers (Wingate 20, Mars Hill 23) ...
