Men's basketball notes and game recaps for week ending February 13, 2011:
ANDERSON - The Trojans dropped a pair of road contests last week, falling at Newberry 87-75 and suffering a 75-69 setback at Catawba Saturday afternoon … Four Trojans reached double figures versus the Wolves, but AU was unable to overcome second-half foul trouble as Newberry used a 12-3 second-half run to gain a 63-55 lead with 7:37 remaining … Junior center Taylor Shugart recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds … Catawba opened a 55-38 lead early in the second half, then held off an AU rally that saw the Trojans climb within two in the final 10 minutes. A quintet of Trojans averaged double figures on the week, led by senior Brandon Young's 13 points, while Shugart averaged 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds … Anderson closes out its home slate by playing host to Tusculum on Wednesday and LMU on Senior Day.
BREVARD - The Brevard College men's basketball team went 1-1 this past week, defeating Catawba at home on Wednesday, 90-75, while falling to Mars Hill on the road on Saturday, 91-80 ... Josh Jordan recorded his fourth double-double of the 2010-2011 season and Josh Roper added 26 points as Brevard played arguably their most complete game of the year in recording the 90-75 victory on Wednesday night over the visiting Catawba College Indians ... Roper added five assists and four rebounds as the Tornados built an 18 point lead at the half in a rematch of last year's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship game ... Jordan scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Tornados shot 52.9 percent (36-68) from the floor in the contest, while Vincent Dombrowski added 12 points off the bench as 10 Tornados players scored in the contest ... Whitney Galloway hit his first career three-pointer in the victory as the Tornados hit 42.9 percent (9-21) of their shots from behind the arc and held the 38-28 rebounding advantage and outscored the Indians in the paint, 48-34 ... On Saturday, Roper and Gaither Hendrix combined for 28 points in the second half as the Tornados attempted to comeback, but three Mars Hill Lions players scored over 20 points, led by Donterious Hughes' game high 25 as the Tornados fell in Stanford Arena, 91-80 ... The Tornados split the season series with the Lions in falling on Saturday afternoon … Roper led Brevard with 24 points and added five rebounds, while Hendrix scored 20 with four assists as the Tornados hit 42.0 percent (29-69) form the floor in the game ... Drew Schauss added 10 points and five rebounds after missing most of the week with an ankle injury as the Tornados fell to the Lions ... The Tornados have three games this week, traveling to Young Harris on Monday, returning home to host Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday for Brevard's WBCA PinkZone Game, and taking to the road again on Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne.
CARSON-NEWMAN - The Carson-Newman Eagles went 1-1 on the week, dropping a game at Tusculum on Wednesday before closing out the week with a victory at home over Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday ... With the split, the Eagles are now 10-12 overall and 7-7 in the conference ... The Eagles were unable to overcome a hot-shooting Tusculum team on Wednesday night, as the Pioneers pulled out a 78-72 victory at Pioneer Arena ... Tusculum shot a season-high 61.9 percent (26-of-42) from the floor, including a 10-of-17 effort from behind the arc ... The Eagles also had a stellar night shooting ... C-N scored at a 53.1 percent clip (26-of-49), including 11 3-pointers ... Junior forward Kevin Hare tossed in 18 points to lead the Eagles, while John Holleman chipped in 16 points ... Bradley Tumer finished with 10 points and eight assists ... The Pioneers took a 23-13 lead midway through the first half, but Hare answered at the other end with a deep 3-pointer from the top of the arc to spark a huge C-N run to close out the half ... The Eagles outscored Tusculum 20-8 to head into the locker room with a 33-31 lead ... After Tusculum went back on top at 56-55 late, Ishmael Sanders drilled a jumper to give C-N the lead back at 57-56 with 5:46 left, but Tusculum went on an 8-0 run to take a 64-57 lead ... Dionte Grey converted a 3-point play to cap the run with 3:42 left ... C-N was unable to pull closer than four points the rest of the way ... Sanders fired in a game-high 22 points to lead C-N to a 65-57 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday night at Holt Fieldhouse ... Sanders was 4-of-8 from 3-point range and went 10-of-10 from the free-throw line ... The Eagles shot 48.7 percent (19-of-39) from the floor, including a 10-of-18 effort in the second half ... Lenoir-Rhyne shot just 35.4 percent (23-of-65) on the night and was just 5-of-21 from deep ... Tumer pitched in 15 points and four assists for C-N, while senior center Brandon Evans added seven points, six rebounds and three blocks ... Erwin Staten tossed in seven points in the win ... The Eagles jumped out to an 11-3 lead early on behind four points from Tumer ... After the Bears trimmed C-N's lead to 13-9, the Eagles outscored Lenoir-Rhyne 16-9 to close out the half ... Sanders knocked down three free throws with 1:11 remaining to give C-N a 29-18 lead heading into the locker room ... C-N took its biggest lead of the game to open the second half at 31-18 on a layup by Kevin Leatherwood ... However, the Bears answered with a 15-5 run with 13:24 left to pull to within 36-33 ... Then C-N pushed its lead back to nine points with a 6-0 run, but Lenoir-Rhyne scrapped back and cut the Eagles' lead to 44-42 with 8:05 remaining ... But that would be as close as the Bears could get, as the Eagles went 8-for-10 at the charity stripe during the last minute to seal the win ... The Eagles return to the hardwood on Wednesday at home against Mars Hill ... Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
CATAWBA - Catawba split a pair of league games last week, falling at Brevard 90-75 then rebounding to top Anderson 75-69 at home on Saturday ... The Indians were hot from the outside against Anderson, canning 10-of-13 three-pointers in the first half and 13-of-23 for the game ... Dominick Reid had a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Keon Moore joined Reid with 23 points and pulled down nine boards ... Moore hit on five three-pointers ... Catawba also out-rebounded Anderson 42-33 and committed just six turnovers ... In the loss to Brevard, the Indians got 18 points from Reid and 16 from Moore, but had 17 turnovers and were a minus-10 on the boards ... Brevard shot nearly 58 percent in the first half to take a 55-37 lead ... Reid and Moore are pacing the Indians on the season ... Reid is leading the way at 16.7 points and 5.5 rebounds, while Moore adds 16.5 points and 5.4 rebounds ... Moore has been a spark in SAC games, averaging just over 18 points a contest.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne University men's basketball team (2-20, 1-13) lost both its games last week, losing to South Atlantic Conference-foes Wingate (67-58) and Carson-Newman (65-57) on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively … Trailing 56-53 late in the game, the Bulldogs ran off 10 straight points to take control and win on the Bears' home floor … Wingate's Odell Turner led all scorers with 23 points and 11 rebounds as the Bulldogs swept the season series from the Bears … L-R junior guard Kevin Davis (Charlotte, N.C.) scored a career-high 19 points and connected on four treys while junior forward Jeff Thomas (Chapel Hill, N.C.) added 16 points despite the loss … Thomas tallied a double-double (15 points and 10 rebounds) and sophomore guard Alex Watkins (Charlotte, N.C.) added 12 points but the Bears came up short against the Eagles … Lenoir-Rhyne looks to snap its school-record 14-game losing streak when it travels to Salisbury, N.C., to take on Catawba Wednesday at 8 p.m. … L-R also returns home to take on Brevard Saturday at 6 p.m. … Lenoir-Rhyne lost in overtime to both Catawba (83-81) and Brevard (85-83) in the previous meetings between the two schools.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - The fifth-ranked Railsplitters clinched their first-ever South Atlantic Conference regular-season championship, as they won both games last week to improve to 22-0, 14-0 in the SAC … They also became the first men's team in the SAC to win 14 conference games in a season … On Wednesday, offensive rebounding was the difference as LMU pulled down 24 in the 71-68 win at Mars Hill … Early on, Mars Hill's zone defense was effective against LMU's high-powered offense … LMU battled back and eventually tied the game at 17-17 with 6:33 left on a pair of free throws by Wally Jones … The teams then traded leads throughout the majority of the half with neither leading by more than three points … Free throws by D'Mario Curry with 1:09 remaining and a jumper by Darryl Garrett with 42 seconds left gave LMU the 28-26 lead at the half … The second half saw nine ties and 16 lead changes … A dunk by Garrett with 15 seconds left gave the Railsplitters a 67-64 cushion … Mars Hill hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to two … LMU's Cam Carden got the inbound and was quickly fouled. He hit both free throws to make the lead 69-65 … MHC's Marshall Adams then hit a closely guarded three-pointer to cut the lead to 69-68 with seven seconds remaining … LMU then went for the long inbound down the court, catching the Lions off-guard and running some clock … Brandon Armstrong was fouled with 0.1 seconds remaining and hit both free throws to give LMU the 71-68 win … LMU was led by Curry's 21 points off the bench. Garrett scored 15 and Armstrong chipped in 11 points … The Railsplitters out-rebounded the Lions 47-32, with 24 of those being offensive rebounds … On Saturday, LMU clinched the SAC regular-season championship with the 84-72 over Newberry … LMU jumped into the lead quickly, gaining a 5-0 advantage after two minutes of play in the game … The Railsplitters added to this lead, pushing the lead out to 11 with 12:47 remaining in the half … Newberrry made a late run to cut the lead to 40-38 at halftime … LMU's Brandon Armstrong opened the second half with a three-point basket, giving the Railsplitters a five-point lead … Despite some runs by Newberry, LMU would extend the lead and come away with the 84-72 win … The Railsplitters were led Brandon Armstrong's game-high 22 points … D'Mario Curry finished with 17 points and Kierre Jordan added in 15 points off the bench … Curry led all players with 12 rebounds … LMU will look to continue their perfect season on Wednesday as they travel to Brevard College.
MARS HILL - Mars Hill went 1-1 last week to take their season record to 9-13 on the season and 6-8 in the SAC … Dion Malachi leads the SAC in blocks. He is third in the league in field goal percentage and sixth in rebounding. Dion ranks tenth in the SAC in scoring … Donterious Hughes and Sammy Emile are second in the conference in scoring. Last week Emile averaged 21.5 points per game hitting 53.6 percent of his shot from the floor and 62.5 percent of his attempts from behind the arc … MHC will play at Carson-Newman on Wednesday night. The Lions will provide a live audio webcast of the game. The Coca-Cola Tip-Off Show will begin at 5:30 p.m. prior to the start of the women's game. MHC will then play at SAC foe Wingate University on Saturday at 4 p.m. The radio webcast will begin at 1:30 p.m. prior to the start of the women's contest.
NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves avenged an early season loss to Anderson on Wednesday, but fell on the road to No. 5 Lincoln Memorial on Saturday to manage a split for the week … Newberry is now 11-11 overall and 6-8 in the league … On Wednesday, Newberry beat Anderson 87-75 … Tony Davis was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor en route to a game high 20 points … Brandon Riley scored 18 and Jawuan Lockhart scored a career-high 13 points as Newbery shot 53.4 percent from the field … On Saturday, Newberry was LMU's 22nd straight victim, falling 84-72 … The Wolves trailed by just two at halftime, but were outshot in the second half … Brunes Charles scored 13 to lead Newberry, while Matt Dixon had 11 and Ray Robinson had 10 … Newberry travels to Wingate this Wednesday and hosts Carson-Newman on Saturday.
TUSCULUM - The Tusculum Pioneers (11-13, 8-6 SAC) split its two home games last week … The Pioneers opened the week with a 78-72 win over arch-rival Carson-Newman … Tusculum fell out of second place in the league with a 61-50 loss to Wingate … In the Carson-Newman game, the Pioneers shot 61.9 percent from the field, along with 10-of-17 from three-point territory … Senior Rob Troutman led the Pioneers with 22 points, shooting 7-of-9 from the floor and 6-of-8 from three-point land … Junior Kevin Vest added 18 markers, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor with three 3-pointers … Sophomore Dionte Grey finished with 10 markers and four assists, while junior Justin Steigerwald tallied six points and a career-high 10 assists … In the Wingate game, Tusculum shot just 35 percent from the field … Grey matched his career-best with 12 points to lead Tusculum as he went 5-of-6 from the field … Troutman added 11 points, while Steigerwald and Vest scored 10 and nine points, respectively … Tusculum has made a three-point field goal in 663 consecutive games … Troutman is shooting 43.6 percent from three-point land for his career, which is the second highest in school history and seventh best in the SAC record book … He has connected on a three-pointer in 30 of his last 32 games, including 11 consecutive contests where he has 36-of-71 (50.7 percent) during that span … Troutman needs 68 points to join the 1,000-Point Club … Steigerwald has recorded an assist in his last 41 starts … Over the last three seasons, Tusculum has led the SAC in scoring defense (63.1 ppg) and free throw percentage (.760) … The Pioneers will be on the road on Wednesday at SAC newcomer Anderson … TC is 5-1 this year in SAC road games … Tusculum will return home on Saturday to host Catawba in TC's regular season home finale.
WINGATE - The Wingate University men's basketball team is on a four-game winning streak entering a three-game home stand. On Saturday, sophomore forward Odell Turner posted team-bests with 16 points, eight rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots as the Bulldogs collected a 61-50 SAC victory over host Tusculum College … The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire Saturday, improving to 14-8 overall and 9-5 in the SAC with their fourth consecutive victory. With the triumph, Wingate gains sole possession of second place in the league standings … Turner collected 31 points and 20 rebounds in two regular season contests against the TC Pioneers this year. Bulldog junior guard Chase Smith and sophomore guard Paidrick Matilus posted 12 points each Saturday. Smith hit four-of-seven from downtown, while Matilus made two-of-three triples. Freshman forward Robert Carpenter nailed three-of-four trifectas en route to a nine-point night. Matilus and Carpenter helped the Wingate bench outscore the Tusculum reserves 26-3 … Wingate was very efficient, hitting 19-of-37 shots for a 51.4 percent clip Saturday. The Bulldogs converted nine-of-16 triples (56.3 percent). Wingate leads the SAC in three-point field goal percentage at 38.9 percent (146-of-375). Tusculum managed only 34.9 percent shooting Saturday (15-of-43). The Pioneer reserves hit one-of-seven field goals (14.3 percent), while the Bulldog substitutes nailed 10-of-15 attempts (66.7 percent) … Turner had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 67-58 SAC triumph over host Lenoir-Rhyne University Wednesday night in Shuford Gymnasium. With the victory, the Bulldogs sweep the season series over the Bears … Turner had 15 points and five rebounds after intermission as Wingate rallied from a 26-23 halftime deficit. The 2010 SAC Freshman of the Year has six double-doubles this season. Matilus added 14 points for the visitors. Matilus has 50 points in his last three games against the L-R Bears … The contest featured 12 ties and 13 lead changes, including seven ties and nine lead changes in the second half. Wingate finished the game on a 16-4 run to take the victory. Turner contributed a team-high seven points to the game-ending flurry … The Bulldogs hit eight-of-10 free throws in the waning moments to keep the Bears at bay. On the night, Wingate converted 85 percent (17-of-20) of its charity tosses. The Bulldogs shot 47.9 percent from the floor (23-of-48), including a 13-of-25 effort after halftime (52 percent) … Turner and his teammates scored 36 points in the paint, compared to 18 for the Bears. The Bulldogs converted 17 L-R turnovers into 18 points. The hosts managed only 10 points off 16 Wingate miscues. Turner filled out his statistics sheet with three assists, three steals and two blocked shots in 32 minutes. The Myers Park High School product hit seven-of-nine field goals and nine-of-10 free throws. Bulldog junior guard Jaime Vaughn had eight points, four assists and two steals … Turner averaged 19.5 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game in Wingate's two victories last week. He shot 68.8 percent from the floor (11-of-16) for the road-warrior Bulldogs. Turner is one of only six SAC players who are listed in the top 15 in the league scoring and rebounding charts. Turner is third in rebounding (8.3 rebounds per game) and 11th in scoring (14.6 points per game). In SAC play, Turner steps up his game with his 14.9 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game averages in league contests … Wingate sophomore point guard Ethan Kincaid leads the SAC with his 1.69 assist-to-turnover ratio. On the season, Kincaid has a team-best 86 assists and only 51 turnovers. Kincaid is third in the SAC in assists. Vaughn is fourth in the SAC with his 43.5 percent shooting from downtown (40-of-92).
