Seeding Scenarios Released For Men’s Basketball Tournament

The South Atlantic Conference has released the seeding scenarios for the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, heading into the final regular-season contests on Saturday.

The official tournament seedings and brackets will be released by the conference office on Saturday night following the completion of all contests.

TIEBREAKER PROCESS

The seeding for the tournament shall be based on the results of the regular season conference matches (winning percentage). If a tie(s) exists in the final regular season standings the following criteria will be used to determine the tournament seeds:
1. Head-to-head record among tied teams.
2. If a tie still exists, a comparison of each team's record against all remaining seeds in the tournament. The comparison of records will begin with the highest seed possible and continue all the way through the lowest seed, if necessary. If two or more teams are tied at another seed (e.g. first or second), then the composite record against those teams will be used to break the tie.
3. If a tie still exists, the Commissioner conducts a coin flip.

In the event of multiple ties (more than two teams tying at a position), a comparison of the tied teams' head-to-head records shall be evaluated to determine if a team(s) has an advantage in wins. If that process does not resolve the tie or reduce the multiple tie to less teams [when one team is removed from a multiple tie, the remaining ties are broken by reverting back to the first step until the tie is reduced to two teams. At that point, the seeding for the remaining teams is resolved by following the tie-breaking procedures described above], then a comparison each team's record against the tournament's number one seed (or highest possible seed) shall be evaluated. If the tie still cannot be broken, then a comparison of each team's record against the next highest seed shall be evaluated. This process will continue all the way through the lowest seed, if necessary. If the tie still cannot be broken, it shall be broken by a coin flip conducted by the Commissioner.

SCENARIO ONE
Wingate wins, Anderson wins, Mars Hill wins, Catawba wins

• Anderson is 2-0 vs. Wingate, so Anderson is the #2 seed.
• In the head to head comparison between Brevard, C-N, Catawba, Newberry and Tusculum, both Newberry and Tusculum are 5-3, Catawba is 4-4 and Brevard and C-N are both 3-5. Newberry and Tusculum are 1-1 head to head and both are 0-2 vs. LMU. Newberry is 1-1 vs. Anderson and Tusculum is 0-2 vs. Anderson, so Newberry is the #4 seed.
• In the head to head comparison between Brevard, C-N, Catawba and Tusculum, Tusculum is 4-2, Catawba and Brevard are 3-3 and C-N is 2-4, so Tusculum is the #5 seed.
• In the head to head comparison between Brevard, C-N and Catawba, all three are 2-2. Brevard is 1-1 vs. LMU and C-N and Catawba are both 0-2 vs. LMU, so Brevard is the #6 seed.
• Catawba is 2-0 vs. C-N, so Catawba is the #7 seed.

SCENARIO TWO
Brevard wins, Carson-Newman wins, Tusculum wins, Newberry wins

• Anderson is 2-0 vs. Wingate, so Anderson is the #2 seed.
• In the head to head comparison between Brevard, C-N, Newberry and Tusculum, both Newberry and Tusculum are 4-2, C-N is 3-3 and Brevard is 1-5. Newberry and Tusculum are 1-1 head to head and both are 0-2 vs. LMU. Newberry is 1-1 vs. Anderson and Tusculum is 0-2 vs. Anderson, so Newberry is the #4 seed.
• In the head to head comparison between Brevard, C-N and Tusculum, Tusculum is 3-1, C-N is 2-2 and Brevard is 1-3, so Tusculum is the #5 seed.
• C-N is 2-0 vs. Brevard, so C-N is the #6 seed.

SCENARIO THREE
Brevard wins, Carson-Newman wins, Mars Hill wins, Catawba wins

• Anderson is 2-0 vs. Wingate, so Anderson is the #2 seed.
• C-N is 2-0 vs. Brevard, so C-N is the #4 seed.
• In the head to head comparison between Catawba, Newberry and Tusculum, all three are 2-2. Further, all three are 0-2 vs. LMU; however, Catawba and Newberry are 1-1 vs. Anderson and Tusculum is 0-2 vs. Anderson so Tusculum is removed. Catawba and Newberry are 1-1 head to head and both have the same record against LMU (0-2), Anderson (1-1) and Wingate (0-2). Catawba is 2-0 vs. C-N and Newberry is 1-1 vs. C-N, so Catawba is the #6 seed.
• Newberry and Tusculum are 1-1 head to head and both are 0-2 vs. LMU. Newberry is 1-1 vs. Anderson and Tusculum is 0-2 vs. Anderson, so Newberry is the #7 seed.

SCENARIO FOUR
Wingate wins, C-N wins, Tusculum wins, Newberry wins

• In the head to head comparison between C-N, Newberry and Tusculum, Tusculum is 3-1, Newberry is 2-2 and C-N is 1-3, so Tusculum is the #4 seed.
• C-N and Newberry are 1-1 head to head and both are 0-2 vs. LMU and Wingate. C-N is 2-0 vs. Anderson and Newberry is 1-1 vs. Anderson, so C-N is the #5 seed.

SCENARIO FIVE
Wingate wins, Anderson wins, Tusculum wins, Catawba wins

• Anderson is 2-0 vs. Wingate, so Anderson is the #2 seed.
• In the head to head comparison between Brevard, C-N, Catawba and Newberry, Newberry is 4-2, C-N and Catawba are 3-3 and Brevard is 2-4, so Newberry is the #5 seed.
• In the head to head comparison between Brevard, C-N and Catawba, all three are 2-2. Brevard is 1-1 vs. LMU and both C-N and Catawba are 0-2 vs. LMU, so Brevard is the #6 seed.
• Catawba is 2-0 vs. C-N, so Catawba is the #7 seed.

SCENARIO SIX
Wingate wins, Anderson wins, Mars Hill wins, Newberry wins

• Anderson is 2-0 vs. Wingate, so Anderson is the #2 seed.
• In the head to head comparison between Brevard, C-N and Tusculum, Tusculum is 3-1, C-N is 2-2 and Brevard is 1-3, so Tusculum is the #5 seed.
• C-N is 2-0 vs. Brevard, so C-N is the #6 seed.
• Catawba is 2-0 vs. Mars Hill, so Catawba is the #8 seed.
