Newberry’s Garner, Wingate’s Burton Earn SAC Basketball Player of the Week Honors

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry forward Savad Garner and Wingate guard Nikki Burton have been named the SAC Basketball Players of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Garner led Newberry to a perfect 3-0 week and was named MVP of the Newberry Classic. He averaged 19 points over the three games, shooting an impressive 77.4-percent from the field.

Garner also averaged 4.3 rebounds on the week and shot 75-precent from the foul line. His best performance came against North Georgia, as he scored 21 points on nine-of-13 shooting and pulled down four rebounds in Newberry's 85-83 victory.

Burton had a big week for Wingate as well, averaging 23 points, five rebounds and five steals as the Bulldogs went 1-1 in the Queen City Classic.

Against Winston Salem St., Burton scored 25 points on nine-of-11 shooting as the Bulldogs won, 84-59. She followed that up with 23 points in a narrow loss to Johnson C. Smith.
