ROCK HILL, S.C. – Wingate's Odell Turner and Tusculum's Kendal Baxter have been picked as the SAC Basketball Players of the Week following big performances over the Thanksgiving week, the league office announced Monday.
Turner averaged a double-double of 17.5 points and 11 rebounds last week as the Wingate men picked up convincing wins over UNC Pembroke and Columbus St.
He started the week by going for 16 points and 14 rebounds on Tuesday against UNCP, and then finished with 19 points and eight boards on Saturday against CSU.
The senior forward shot 54.5-percent from the field in the two games and also added a total of five assists, two steals and two blocks.
Turner currently leads the SAC in rebounding with an average of 10 per game.
Baxter had a monster week for the Tusculum women, averaging 32.5 points per game in the Pioneers' wins over Rollins and Charleston.
The senior guard opened the Rollins Thanksgiving Tournament by pouring in a career-high 37 points on Friday against host Rollins. She made 10-of-18 three-pointers in the contest, which were the second-most in SAC history – and just one shy of her record of 11, set last year against LMU.
Baxter followed that performance with 28 points – including six more three-pointers -- on Saturday in the title game against Charleston.
Baxter also averaged 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in the two games as she earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player award. She currently leads the SAC in scoring at 22 points per game.
