LMU’s Jones, Newberry’s Lepaio Named SAC Basketball Players of the Week
Following the last full week of competition before schools break for the holidays, Lincoln Memorial guard Wally Jones and Newberry center Haylee Lepaio have been selected as the SAC Basketball Players of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Following the last full week of competition before schools break for the holidays, Lincoln Memorial guard Wally Jones and Newberry center Haylee Lepaio have been selected as the SAC Basketball Players of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Jones led the LMU men -- who entered the week ranked 20th in the nation -- to a 75-68 victory over in-state rival King on Sunday by scoring a game-high 21 points. The senior went 7-of-13 from the field, including 6-of-9 from long distance. He also added five rebounds and a steal.
Jones is currently LMU's second-leading scorer at 14.1 points per game. He is tied for fourth in the SAC in three-point shooting at 50-percent.
Lepaio helped the Newberry women pick up home victories over Voorhees and Limestone last week by averaging a double-double of 20.5 points and 13 rebounds.
On Monday against Voorhees, Lepaio scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots as the Wolves won 71-68.
Then on Saturday, the sophomore finished with 18 points and 18 rebounds as Newberry upset No. 14 Limestone, 67-63. It was her fifth double-double of the season and 18th of her career.
Lepaio also added three assists on the week. She now leads the SAC in both scoring (18.7) and rebounding (10.8).
