Wingate’s Daye, Newberry’s Lepaio Earn SAC Basketball Weekly Awards

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Wingate sophomore Ryan Daye and Newberry sophomore Haylee Lepaio have been named the SAC basketball Players of the Week, it was announced on Monday. This week's awards factored in all results from over the holiday break.
Daye averaged 22.5 points on an impressive 75-percent shooting in Wingate's two games over the break – a Dec. 19 loss at Mount Olive and a Jan. 5 victory over Tusculum.
Daye scored 22 against Mount Olive, then returned from a two-week layoff with 23 against TC. The guard hit 6-of-8 three pointers and 9-of-11 free throws in the two games.
Daye is currently averaging 10.2 points per game for Wingate, which is off to a 2-0 start in conference play.
Lepaio, meanwhile, earned Player of the Week honors for the third time this season by averaging 23 points and 7.7 rebounds in three Newberry wins.
In her final game before breaking for Christmas, Lepaio scored 23 in the Wolves' win over Columbia (S.C.) on Dec. 17. She returned with a double-double of 25 points and 10 boards on Dec. 31 in a victory at Claflin. It was her sixth double-double of the season.
Lepaio then finished with 21 points and seven rebounds on Saturday as Newberry picked up a league victory over Mars Hill.
Behind Lepaio, Newberry sits atop the SAC standings at 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. She currently leads the league in both scoring (19.8) and rebounding (10.0).
