SAC Names Carson-Newman's Sanders, Catawba's May Basketball Players of the Week
Heading into the final week of the SAC basketball regular season, Carson-Newman guard Ishmael Sanders and Catawba center Taylor May have been selected as the conferenceââ¬â¢s Players of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Heading into the final week of the SAC basketball regular season, Carson-Newman guard Ishmael Sanders and Catawba center Taylor May have been selected as the conference's Players of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
Sanders led the Carson-Newman men to a split in key games last week against Lincoln Memorial and Anderson, keeping the Eagles just a game back of the top spot in the conference standings. He opened the week by scoring 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting on Wednesday in a 69-64 loss at LMU.
Sanders then scored 33 points on Saturday in a dominant 92-55 win over Anderson. He made nine three-pointers against the Trojans, which tied for the fourth-most in a game in SAC history. The junior also broke C-N's single-season record for made three-pointers in the victory.
In addition, Sanders added seven assists and three steals in the two games. He has scored 25 points or more in four-straight games, and is tied for the conference lead in scoring at 19.3 points per game.

May kept the Catawba women alive for the SAC title and in line for a top-four seed in the conference tournament by averaging 17.5 points and six rebounds in wins over Mars Hill and Newberry.
May scored 17 points on Wednesday in a 78-44 win at Mars Hill, then went for 18 points and nine rebounds on Saturday in a 64-42 victory over Newberry.
The senior shot 68.4-percent from the field and was perfect from the foul line on the week while adding four steals and two assists. She is currently averaging 9.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game on the season.
