Tusculum's Gibson Named SAC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Tusculum's Trenton Gibson was voted the 2021-22 South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced today. This is the second consecutive Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for Gibson.
Gibson, a senior from Murfreesboro, Tenn., is a sports management and Master of Business Administration major with a 4.0 GPA. A first team All-SAC selection in 2021-22, Gibson averaged 17.2 points and 5.2 assists per game while leading the Pioneers to a 19-8 record. The 2020-21 SAC Player of the Year and 2018-19 SAC Freshman of the Year, Gibson closes out his career as a Pioneer with 1,500 points, 600 rebounds, 400 assists, and 100 steals.
"My time coaching Trenton here at Tusculum has been nothing short of amazing," said Tusculum head men's basketball coach JT Burton. "Having the opportunity to coach a player that wins this award once is unbelievable but winning this prestigious award twice is something I will always cherish. I couldn't be more proud of Trenton."
A top-level academic student-athlete, Gibson is a four-time Charles Oliver Gray Honors List selection, a four-time Dean's List honoree, and a four-time Tusculum President's List selection. He is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's Basketball First Team pick, is a three-time Division II Athletic Directors Association Honor Roll selection, is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, and has been named to the Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll and SAC Commissioner's Honor four times. Gibson received the SAC Elite 20 Award for the top GPA at the final site of the SAC Men's Basketball Championship in 2019-20 and he is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American.
In addition to his success on the basketball court and in the classroom, Gibson has been an active member of the community. He volunteers at the Nettie Day of Service, is a member of the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and is a Pioneer Peer serving as a mentor for incoming freshmen. He volunteers as a youth basketball coach with the Above the Rim program and has served as a sports management intern within the Tusculum Athletic department for the last two years.
