Lincoln Memorial Captures Food Lion SAC Men’s Golf Tournament Title
HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. - The Lincoln Memorial University men's golf team shot an 873 (+9) to win the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Championship Tuesday at the Etowah Valley Country Club & Golf Resort. The Railsplitters, who won their first-ever league championship, also earned the SAC's automatic qualifying spot in the NCAA Division II Regionals.
Newberry, the 2008 and 2009 SAC Champions, trailed by eight strokes after 36 holes. The Railsplitters shot a tournament best 286, 2-under par, in the final round to finish the competition with a 14 stroke cushion (295-292-286; +9).
Wingate University took third place with an 899 (304-297-298; +35).
Individually, Newberry's Daniel Stanley became the second Newberry men's golfer to win the individual SAC Championship in the last three years. Stanley shot an even par 216 (73-71-72) on the par-72, 6,796-yard course, narrowly edging Lincoln Memorial's Jamie Chapman (73-73-71; +1).
Stanley, a first team All-SAC selection, racked up 13 birdies en route to his second consecutive tournament victory after taking first place at the Bearcat Classic in Greenwood, S.C. on March 29-30.
In addition to Stanley and Chapman, Jason Garrett (Lenoir-Rhyne), Joshua Cornett (Lincoln Memorial) and Matthew Campbell (Newberry) earned first-team all-tournament honors.
The all-tournament second team included Eric Kennedy (Lincoln Memorial), Nick York (Tusculum), Garett Heffner (Wingate), Joe Migdal (Mars Hill), Jack Garrett (Lenoir-Rhyne), Brad Cline (Catawba) and Josh Collins (Lincoln Memorial).
The final round of play is where the Railsplitters won the match. Cornett, who had a two-round score of 145, turned in a 73 in his final 18 holes of golf to finish the tournament with a combined score of 218, which tied him for third place. Chapman who shot a pair of 73's in the first two rounds, turned in his best round of the tournament by shooting a 71 in the final 18 holes to finish the event with a score of 217 which helped him take second place honors.
Collins who had a 149 after the first two rounds, shot a 73 in his final round to end the tournament tied for eleventh. Kennedy, the SAC Men's Golf Player of the Year, stood at 152 following the second stanza. He shot a tournament low score of 69 in his final round to close out the championship with a 221 and tied for sixth place. LMU's Cory Bartlett helped the Railsplitters seal the win by placing inside the top-20 by adding a 75 to his first two rounds to finish tied for eighteenth with a 226.
"All five guys contributed and played the best they have all season," said LMU Head Coach Travis Muncy. "We are peaking at the right time and played very solid as a team. We had four guys in the top-10 and that is the best showing we have had all year. As a coach this feeling is hard to describe. These five guys were in control from the first hole to the end of the 54th hole of this golf tournament. It's the first time we have had that all year. I couldn't be more proud of this team. This is one of the most exciting experiences of my life."
