Carson-Newman’s Sneed, Harvie, Wingate’s Jackson Named To ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams
BRISTOL, Conn. -- Three student-athletes from the South Atlantic Conference have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District at-large teams, , as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Wingate University men's golfer Braden Jackson earned first team honors in District III. Carson-Newman women's tennis player Elizabeth Sneed and men's tennis player Jack Harvie earned second team ESPN honors District IV.
District III (college division) includes all non-NCAA Division I schools (Division II, III and NAIA) in Florida, Georgia, Virginia and North and South Carolina. Derbyshire, Jackson and the other eight men's first team selections move on to the national ballot for 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® honors. District IV include all colleges and universities from Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Ohio and Michigan.

The at-large category covers student-athletes in the following sports: Women's Bowling; Women's Crew; Men's and Women's Fencing; Women's Field Hockey; Men's and Women's Golf; Men's and Women's Gymnastics; Men's and Women's Ice Hockey; Men's and Women's Lacrosse; Men's and Women's Rifle; Men's and Women's Skiing; Men's and Women's Swimming; Men's and Women's Tennis; Men's Volleyball; Men's and Women's Water Polo; and Men's Wrestling.
Jackson Dallas, N.C.) won the prestigious South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for men's golf this year. He is the first Wingate men's golf student-athlete to win the SAC Scholar-Athlete Award. An accounting major, Jackson possesses a 3.92 GPA.
This year, Jackson averaged 77.4 strokes per round. He posted a season-best 72 at the Tusculum Classic on Sept. 28, 2009. Jackson had one top 10 finish and four top 20 showings this season. As a freshman, Jackson was Wingate's team MVP with a 75.7 average. He posted a one-under-par 71 in the first round of the Food Lion SAC tournament his inaugural season.
A two-year starter, Jackson shot a 71 in the second round of the 2008 Tusculum Classic. A Wingate University marshal, Jackson has spent time in the community with the Union County Habitat for Humanity movement. He also participated in the United Way Day of Caring with his golf teammates during August of 2009.
Sneed (Kingsport, Tenn.), who guided the Lady Eagles to an 11-5 record this season, has a double major in accounting and Spanish, and has a 3.91 GPA. She also received the South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award this season.
Sneed is a three-time first-team All-SAC selection. This season, she was 4-4 in conference play at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, and 10-4 overall in singles play and 11-3 in doubles play.
She is a member of three honor societies, including serving as president of Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honor society. She has been named to the Dean's List every semester. Sneed has served as a senator in Carson-Newman's student government association and volunteers with several civic groups. Elizabeth has worked with organizations that help clothe and feed needy families, and distribute food to low-income families, as well as preparing tax returns for those that need assistance.
Harvie (Snellville, Ga.), who helped lead the Eagles to a 9-8 mark in 2010, has double major in Business Administration and Spanish and has a perfect 4.0 GPA. He has been named to the Dean's List every semester and is a four-year honor student at C-N. Harvie has also been named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll three times to date.
Harvie, a member of Carson-Newman's Alpha Chi honor society and Phi Sigma Tau honor society for Philosophy, volunteers at local retirement homes and works as a part of "Coats for the Cold," which provides coats for the needy.
He serves on C-N's Mortar Board community service organizations, which organizes a number of fundraisers, including cereal drives for Appalachian Outreach and Carson-Newman's Operation In-As-Much, a campus and community clean-up. Harvie is also a volunteer in a youth reading program called "Reading is Leading" through the Boys and Girls Club.
Wingate also had two other student-athletes in non-SAC sports make the District III team. Redshirt senior lacrosse midfield Angus Derbyshire (Thurmont, Md.) joined Jackson on the first team, while senior national champion swimmer Mason Norman (Duluth, Ga.) earned second team laurels.
Student-athletes selected for Academic All-District honors must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. They must possess at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale). They must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at his institution.
