Pairings announced for Food Lion SAC Men’s Soccer Tournament
ROCK HILL - Carson-Newman College, which won the regular-season championship for the fourth consecutive year by going unbeaten in conference play, is the top seed for the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Championship, which begins Wednesday with quarterfinal play.
The Eagles, 13-0-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the conference, are ranked second in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas national poll. The Eagles will get a bye in the quarterfinal round, and then host the semifinals and finals Friday and Sunday.
Second seed Lenoir-Rhyne College will host seventh-seed Mars Hill College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The 17th-ranked Bears went 5-1 in conference play and are 15-1 overall, with their only loss this season to Carson-Newman. Mars Hill is 0-5-1 in conference play and 5-8-2 overall.
Newberry College and Presbyterian College tied for third place in the final standings. Newberry went 3-3 in conference play, while Presbyterian was 2-2-2. Newberry earned the third seed by virtue of its 2-1 win over Presbyterian.
Newberry, 8-8 overall, will host sixth-seed Wingate on Wednesday. The Bulldogs are 2-4 in the conference and 8-7-1 overall.
Presbyterian is the fourth seed. The Blue Hose are 8-2-3 overall. The Blue Hose will host Catawba, 2-4 in the SAC and 10-7 overall. Catawba and Wingate finished tied in the standings, but Catawba earned the fifth seed by virtue of its 4-2 win over Wingate.
The semifinals of the men's tournament are scheduled for Friday at Carson-Newman College. Host Carson-Newman will face and Catawba/Presbyterian winner at Noon. The other semifinal match is at 3 p.m. and will feature the winners of the Mars Hill/Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate/Newberry matches.
The men's soccer championship is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
