2006 SAC Men’s Soccer All-Conference Team Announced
Carson-Newman?s Dario Carrasco, Lenoir-Rhyne?s Quinn named Player of the Year
ROCK HILL, SC - Dario Carrasco, who helped Carson-Newman to its fourth straight conference title by leading the South Atlantic Conference in goals per match, and Lenoir-Rhyne's Ged Quinn, who anchored a defense that allowed just nine goals, were named the 2006 South Atlantic Conference men's soccer Co-Players of the Year, the league announced today.
Carrasco, a senior forward from Malaga, Spain, scored 18 goals in 14 games for a league-high 1.29 per game average. He also led the conference with 2.57 points per match for the nationally third-ranked Eagles.
Quinn, a senior defender from Jarrow, England, helped the Bears
set a school-record for wins in a season.
Carson-Newman's Omar Cooke, a freshman forward from Vinton, Va. (William Byrd High School) was named Freshman of the Year after scoring seven goals in his rookie season.
Lenoir-Rhyne head coach Adrian Blewitt, who guided the Bears to a 15-1 record, was named Coach of the Year.
The Scholar Athlete Award for men's soccer went to Daniel Waymont of Mars Hill College, who earned the honor for the second year in a row.
Carson-Newman led the way with seven on the All-Conference team, while Lenoir-Rhyne had six All-Conference selections.
Joining Carrasco on the All-Conference first team from Carson-Newman were midfielder Carlos Maqueda, defender Thomas Ostvold and goalie Tyler Baldock. Cooke, midfielder David Carrasco and defender Everardo Flores were named to the second team.
Lenoir-Rhyne's Quinn, forward Luis Carrizosa, and midfielder
Aaron Wheeler were All-Conference first team selections for the
Bears, with midfielder Matthew Lee, defender John Paul Hanger and
goalkeeper Mark Jorgensen were named to the second team.
Catawba had four All-SAC selections, with midfielder Nathan Zuzga named to the first team. Forward Andrew Landry, midfielder Ryan Villiard and defender Matt Halton were named to the second team.
Newberry and Presbyterian each had three All-Conference selections.
Newberry's Debola Ogunseye and Edsel Rudder were named to the first team, while defender Jeffrey Bell was a second-team selection.
Presbyterian forward Brandon Tucker and defender John Odum were first-team selections, with midfielder Benett Cope was named to the second team.
Wingate defender Kerrin Sheldon was named to the first team, with freshman forward Junior Nyemb was a second-team pick.
Rounding out the All-Conference team is Mars Hill's Waymont.
Waymont, a junior forward from Weaverville, NC (North Buncombe
HS) has a 3.91 GPA as a sports management major. He is a Grayson
Scholar and a member of the Mars Hill College Dean's List and SAC
Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Waymont is a three-year letterwinner for the Lions and ranked eighth in the league in goals per game.
In the community, Waymont works with disable children at Mountain Hopes. He has also volunteered at Festival of Lights to benefit Special Olympics.
