Top Four Seeds Advance In Food Lion Men’s Soccer Tournament
The top four seeds all advanced in quarterfinal action of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men's soccer tournament on Tuesday.
This sets up semifinal action on Friday at Manchester Meadows Soccer Park in Rock Hill S.C., with Lincoln Memorial facing Carson-Newman and Wingate meeting Tusculum. The men's semifinals will be at 3 p.m.

HARROGATE, TN - In quarterfinal round action of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament, the No. 1 seed Lincoln Memorial University men's soccer team took its first step toward a conference crown on Tuesday afternoon by defeating the No. 8 seed Catawba College Catawba Indians 4-0 in Harrogate.
Catawba is a team that has stereotypically caused the Railsplitters problems in the past several years and such was the case in the early minute of the first half on Tuesday. The Catawba Indians forced LMU to do something both offensively and defensively they didn't want to do. The Catawba adjustments held Lincoln Memorial scoreless until the 32nd minute when freshman Jimmy Vandenhurk (Walland, TN) entered the lineup and caught the ball coming off the defender and chipped it into the back left side of the net to put LMU on top 1-0.
Following Vandenhurk's goal, the match remained 1-0 until the 73rd minute when LMU senior midfielder Leonardo de Barros (Brasilia, Brazil) took a short pass in front of the goal by teammate Claudio Rico (Jacarei, Brazil) and punched it into the back left corner for a 2-0 advantage. The goal took a great deal of life out of the Catawba players and Lincoln Memorial used the distraction to capitalize on another goal only minutes later when de Barros scored again with help from Leandro Pereira (Brasilia, Brazil) on a ricochet off the crossbar in the 75th minute.
Leading 3-0 and time working in their favor, the Railsplitters put the icing on the cake in the 81st minute on an unassisted breakaway by forward Leandro Pereira who notched his twentieth goal of the season with the score.
Defensively, both goalkeepers exhibited solid performances. Catawba's Tyler Held went the entire 90 minutes, denying seven of LMU's eleven shots-on-goal, while Lincoln Memorial's Brent Cole (Knoxville, TN) recorded the shutout by tallying five saves.
Catawba ends the year at 7-13 while the Railsplitters improve to 14-3-1 and prepare for the upcoming final-four of the conference tournament to be held in Rock Hill, South Carolina this Friday thru Sunday. The Railsplitters will face Carson-Newman on Friday as the Eagles defeated Lenoir-Rhyne College in their first round match on Tuesday 6-0 in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

team defeated No. 7-seed Mars Hill, 2-1, in the quarterfinal round
of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men's soccer tournament
Tuesday night at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers struck first at the 33:32 mark with an unassisted goal
by Lucas Paulini, recording his seventh of the season. Gareth
Williams scored his sixth goal of the season at the 53:11 mark for
the 2-0 lead.
Mars Hill struck back at the 83:39 mark with an unassisted goal by
Nick Cartwright, recording his fifth of the season.
TC goalie Lance Moore had four saves while Mars Hill keeper Sean
Merfeld had 10.
The Pioneers will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. Friday for the
semifinal match of the Food Lion SAC Tournament. Mars Hill ends
their season 8-9-3.

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior midfielder Kerrin Sheldon (Moatsville, W.Va.) scored a close-range goal from a rebound to lead the host Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over Newberry College Tuesday night at the WU Soccer Complex in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament.
The number eight team in this week's NSCAA Division II national top 25 poll, Wingate improves to 16-3-1 overall with the victory. Newberry completes the 2007 campaign 9-10 overall. The Bulldogs will face number 23 Tusculum College (10-7-2 overall) Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the tournament semi-finals at the Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex (Rock Hill, S.C.).
Sheldon was in the right place at the right time, as he chipped in a rebound from a miss by freshman midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) in the 57th minute. Mulholland's right-to-left shot was saved by Newberry junior goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.). The ball squirted to the left-hand side of the goal mouth and Sheldon capitalized by punching in his eighth goal of the season.
Neither team could score in the first half, despite the fact the Bulldogs had 15 shots in the opening frame (compared to only two for the visiting Indians). Wingate's best chance came in the 43rd minute, as freshman forward Andru Harris (Duluth, Ga.) hit the cross-bar from close range.
Wingate freshman goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) collected his 16th win of the season. The Bishop England High School product had two saves. Dieterich stayed busy all night, facing 27 shots and collecting nine saves. The Bulldogs outshot the Indians 27-6 on the night. Wingate claimed a 12-2 edge in shots on goal.
At halftime, Wingate honored seven seniors playing their final SAC contest at the WU Soccer Complex. Sheldon, goalkeepers Jonathan Shute (West End, N.C.) and Matt Van Liew (Deptford, N.J.), defenders Ben Clark (Chesterfield, England), Jordan Bowen (Conyers, Ga.) and Chris Bohach (Charleston, W.Va.) and forward Andrew Charlton (Narragansett, R.I.) have led the Bulldogs to 48 wins entering Friday's Food Lion SAC tournament semi-final match against Tusculum College. The TC Pioneers defeated Mars Hill College 2-1 to advance to Friday's contest.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-- The fourth seeded Carson-Newman Eagles advanced to the semifinal round of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 6-0 rout of Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday afternoon at McCown Field.
With the win, the Eagles (14-2-2) will take on top-seeded Lincoln Memorial on Friday, November 2 in Rock Hill, South Carolina in the semifinals. LMU defeated eighth seed Catawba, 4-0.
C-N dented the scoreboard in the 18th minute when Jakop Storhaug headed in a Dane Hodge throw-in. Marcus Cabralis gave the Eagles the lead for good in the 35th minute with an astounding dribble display for an unassisted goal. Defender Thomas Ostvold ended the first half scoring with a rebound goal for a 3-0 Eagle advantage.
In the second half, the Eagles continued their scoring onslaught when Omar Cooke headed in an entry pass from Ale Oliveira for a 4-0 Eagle lead. Oliveira added another assist on a pass to Chris Collins in the 76th minute. Collins tapped in his fifth goal of the season for a 5-0 advantage. Joe Johns capped the Eagle dominance with a goal in the 86th minute off a Brad Holdren assist.
The Eagles will face LMU at 3:00 p.m. on Friday with the winner advancing to the tournament championship on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
