Catawba, Tusculum, Presbyterian Fall In NCAA Men’s Tennis Regional

BOCA RATON, FL -- Catawba fell to sixth-ranked Lynn University 5-0 in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Southeast Regional on Thursday morning at the Lynn Tennis Courts. The Fighting Knights improved to 19-4, while the Catawba Indians end their season at 19-7.

In doubles, the freshman duo from Lynn of Tomas Racak and Axel Joachim defeated Cyle Petersen and Hector Bousoulas 8-1 in the third position for the first point. The Fighting Knights' Dennis Riegraf and Denis Reinert added a point minutes later by completing an 8-0 victory in the second spot over Sean Soltan and Fernando Aguiar. Lynn completed the sweep after the 13th ranked tandem of Julien Carsuzaa and Lorenzo Cava downed Jose Velazquez and Drew Ramsey 8-2 in the top position.

The Knights claimed victory in both of their singles points by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Eleventh-ranked Riegraf won in the third position over Aguiar while Joachim topped Ramsey in the sixth spot. Lynn led in all other unfinished matches. Second-ranked Cava was up 6-4 over Velazquez in the first position, No. 10 Carsuzaa led 6-2, 0-1 over Soltan in the second spot, 46th ranked Reinert was up 6-0, 4-0 over Bousoulas in the fourth position, and Racak led Petersen 6-0, 0-3 in the fifth spot.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. --- The eighth-ranked Barry University men's tennis team posted a 5-0 win over Tusculum College, Thursday morning in the opening match of the 2007 NCAA Division II Southeast Region-2 Tournament, held at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex.

Barry (14-2) advances to the second round where the Buccaneers will host the winner of Thursday's Rollins College/Presbyterian College match on Friday at 9:30 a.m.

Barry swept all three doubles matches, including an 8-1 pro set win at the No. 1 flight, as Andrew Sharnov and Roman Werschel (ranked No. 18 nationally in doubles) defeated the TC duo of Sergio Espinosa and Carlos Garcia (ranked No. 8 in the region). Tusculum's No. 3 duo of Nicholas Bigler and Julien Jacob jumped out to a 3-2 lead, but Barry's Dirk Benninghaus and Manuel Lauter won four of the next five games to win 8-4.

Sharnov posted the most impressive win of the day as he defeated Garcia 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. For Garcia, it was his first singles loss of the year as he ends the season with an impressive 18-1 worksheet.

Benninghaus recorded the fifth and deciding point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Leo Guaycurus at No. 5 singles.

Tusculum ends its season at 15-7 overall while advancing to the NCAA postseason for the fifth time in the last six years.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Presbyterian fell 5-2 to 11th-ranked Rollins on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. The 2007 South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament champions, PC ends its season with a 17-6 record.

In singles action, Presbyterian's Aaron Chapman garnered a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Tars' No. 1 Brian Compton.

Patrick Fediuk picked up PC's only other win at on the day with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Rollins' Albin Hubscher in the fifth singles flight.

The Tars swept all three doubles matches with No. 1 seeds Brian Compton and Jonathan Gomez coming out on top against Aaron Chapman and Matthew Martin 9-8.

Gustavo Carvalho and Pablo Seijo bettered their season record to 9-3 as they defeated Zach Glankler and Andrew Lee 8-5 in the second seeded bout.

The SSC second team duo of Adrian Tan and Michael Schwartz defeated Fediuk and Michael Nicol 8-6 in the No. 3 position.

Gomez and Seijo won their matches in the No. 3 and No. 4 spot respectively. Gomez overpowered Ruan Olivier 6-1, 6-3 and Seijo beat Nicol 6-4, 6-4 to seal the first round victory for the Tars. The remaining singles matches went unfinished on the afternoon.
