Newberry, Carson-Newman, Lincoln Memorial, Tusculum Advance In Food Lion SAC Men’s Tennis Tournament
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team joined their female counterparts in the semifinals of the 2008 Food Lion SAC Men's Tennis Tournament Tuesday, sweeping their quarterfinal match against Catawba College, 5-0. Third-seeded Newberry (9-6) will play Lincoln Memorial Friday in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Indians received strong performances from each of their three doubles duos. Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) and Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, South Africa) opened the match with a resounding 8-3 win over Sean Soltan and Bryce Cockerham. No. 2 team Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) followed with an 8-3 win of their own over John McCormack and Dana Pallesen, and the pair of Felipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Mikael Jurkovic (Atlanta, Ga.) put the Indians firmly in control with an 8-2 triumph over Hector Bousoulas and Cyle Petersen.
Newberry took two singles matches to secure the victory. Van Vuuren downed Cockerham, 6-2, 6-1, and Sobrinho clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pallesen.

WINGATE, N.C. -- The Carson-Newman College Eagles defeated the Wingate University Bulldogs 5-3 in the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men's tennis tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Wingate University tennis facility. The Eagles improve to 7-5 overall, while Wingate concludes the 2008 campaign 8-13 overall.
Carson-Newman avenges a 5-4 regular season home loss to Wingate on April 1 in Jefferson City, Tenn. Eagle freshman Adriano Kira (Brazil) picked up the deciding point for the visitors, as he topped Wingate junior Jose Valarezo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) 6-4, 6-3 in the number two singles flight. Valarezo outlasted Kira 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the first meeting between the two teams this season.
For the Bulldogs, freshman Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania, Fla.) defeated Carson-Newman's Giuseppe Schwarz (Brazil) 6-2, 6-2 in number one singles. Wingate sophomore Brendan Molan (Charlotte, N.C.) defeated Carson-Newman sophomore Jack Harvie (Snellville, Ga.) 6-1, 6-2 in number four singles action Tuesday.
In doubles play, Valarezo and freshman Braeden Patchell (Oakville, Ontario) teamed up to defeat Carson-Newman's Harvie and Preston Sneed (Kingsport, Tenn.) 8-3 in number one doubles. The Eagles won the number one and the number two doubles decisions.
As Kira picked up the deciding point, Wingate freshman Louis Villarroel (Maraval, Trinidad) led C-N freshman Chris Acker (Knoxville, Tenn.) 3-6, 6-1, 5-2 in the number five singles match. Carson-Newman advances to the Food Lion SAC tournament semi-finals Friday. The Eagles will play number 35 Tusculum College at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, S.C. The first serve is slated for 3 p.m.

MARS HILL, NC - The Lions' men's tennis team, the number two seed in the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament were upset Tuesday afternoon by the No. 7 seed, Lincoln Memorial University, 5-3 at the Hart Tennis Complex. MHC ends the 2008 campaign with a 13-5 overall record. LMU, who improved to 5-10 on the season, advances to the semifinal round to face No. 3 Newberry College in Rock Hill on Friday. Newberry defeated No. 6 Catawba College earlier today, 5-0.
After winning 2-of-3 doubles matches, LMU won three singles matches to seal the win. Hannes Ganss, Bastian Guenther and Zack Jones were victorious for the Railsplitters in singles while the doubles teams of Ganss and Guenther won at No. 1 doubles while Gabor Heredi-Szabo and Zack Jones won at No. 3 doubles.

The Pioneers (18-1), ranked No. 35 in NCAA Division II, advances to Friday's 3 p.m. semifinal against No. 5 seed Carson-Newman College at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, S.C.
Tusculum swept all three doubles points, including an 8-0 victory by the No. 1 duo of Carlos Garcia and Sergio Espinosa over the L-R pairing of Nate Summer and Brad Totten. Garcia won his 13th straight singles match as he defeated Totten 6-0, 6-0 in the third flight.
Nicolas Bigler was victorious in his No. 1 singles match with Summer, 6-1, 6-0 to seal the win for the Pioneers. Lenoir-Rhyne ends its season at 0-10 on the year.
