Wingate’s Flavio Rathsam Named Men’s Tennis Player Of The Week

ROCK HILL, SC -- Wingate University's Flavio Rathsam has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending March 15, 2010. He wins the award for the second time this season.

Rathsam, a sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, won two huge matches as the Bulldogs edged NCAA Division II number 24 Anderson (S.C.) University 5-4 Monday at Wingate.

The Bulldogs tied the match at 4-4 when sophomore Rathsam outlasted Anderson freshman Deni Mehagic 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the number five singles flight. Earlier in the day, Rathsam and classmate Bruno Pudence (Sau Paulo, Brazil) combined for an 8-6 triumph over Renato Assuncao and Stan Atema at the number one doubles flight.

Rathsam is 8-0 in singles this season and 21-1 for his Wingate career. He had a hand in both Bulldog victories in Wingate's tough 5-2 loss to Anderson in the NCAA play-offs last year.
