The South Atlantic Conference Announces Men's Tennis Annual Awards
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSac.com) – Tusculum sophomore Tim Stierle was voted the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year, while Jacob Svantesson of Newberry was voted the League's Freshman of the Year. In addition, Tusculum mentor Adam Jackson was tabbed the Coach of the Year, the League announced today.
Stierle, a sophomore from Boblingen, Germany, went 11-0 in Conference matches this past season. He was 9-0 at the No. 1 flight and posted a 2-0 record at No. 2 singles. In singles play, Stierle lost only two sets the entire season. In Conference doubles play, Stierle led his duo to a 10-1 record at the No. 1 flight. He closed the regular season out at 17-1 overall in singles play and turned in a ledger of 16-1 in doubles action. Stierle earned AstroTurf Player of the Week honors on March 14 as he posted a 3-0 record on the week, including a straight-set win over a Division I opponent from George Mason.
Svantesson, a No. 3 and No. 4 player from Hollviken, Sweden, tied the Newberry record this season with 18 wins as he turned in an overall record of 18-3 this season. He went 7-0 overall at the No. 3 flight and finished the season 11-3 at the No. 4 flight. Svantesson posted a South Atlantic Conference record of 10-1 in singles play. In doubles, his 18-5 record set the Newberry record for wins in a season, while he posted a 9-2 doubles record in South Atlantic Conference play.
First year head coach Jackson guided his Pioneers to their sixth South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship as the Pioneers were Co-Champions with Wingate this season. Tusculum posted an overall record of 19-3, while going 10-1 in South Atlantic Conference action.
Joining Stierle on the First Team singles squad were Per-Erik Soler from Queens, Sebastian Hall of Wingate, Fermando Espana of Newberry, Coker's Tom Sizeland and Connor Kudrick of Wingate.
The First-Team doubles honorees were Hall and Kudrick from Wingate, Stierle and Jonas Winkelmann of Tusculum and Queens' Soler and Andor Vas.
