The South Atlantic Conference Announces Men's Tennis Award Winners
Wingate’s Daniel Belsito was voted the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year, while teammate Josep Canyadell was voted the Conference’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, Queens’ head coach Billy Boykin was named the Coach of the Year, the SAC office announced today.
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate's Daniel Belsito was voted the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year, while teammate Josep Canyadell was voted the Conference's Freshman of the Year. In addition, Queens' head coach Billy Boykin was named the Coach of the Year, the SAC office announced today.
Belsito, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., is the No. 17 ranked player in the nation, according to the latest Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Singles Poll. He was named the SAC AstroTurf Men's Tennis Player of the Week four times this season and had a perfect record in both singles and doubles action in conference. Overall, he posted a record of 17-2 at No. 1 singles this season and along with doubles partner, Josh DuToit, the No. 39 ranked duo was also 17-2 overall at No. 1 doubles.
Canyadell, a freshman from Lleida, Spain, compiled a record of 13-8 overall at No. 2 and No. 3 singles this season, and was 8-2 in SAC play. Playing at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, he went 13-8 overall and was 7-3 in conference. He was named SAC AstroTurf Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Feb. 12.
Boykin guided the Royals to their second-consecutive South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship with a 9-1 record in SAC play. Overall, the Royals finished the 2018 campaign with an 11-3 record. Queens is currently ranked No. 15 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Tennis National Ranking.
Joining Belsito on the All-SAC first team singles squad were Joshua Peress of Lincoln Memorial, Mark Watt from Coker, Newberry's Edison Ambarzumjan, Ignacio Bidegain of Anderson and Agustin Aran Martin from Queens
The All-SAC first team doubles honorees were Belsito and DuToit from Wingate, Watt and Henrik Helbe from Coker and Lenoir-Rhyne's Hamed Gandouz and Shane O'Dea.
