The South Atlantic Conference Announces 2023 Men's Tennis Annual Awards

ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSac.com) – Newberry's Mateo Bivol was voted the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year, while Lincoln Memorial's Alexandru Giurea was voted the Conference's Freshman of the Year.  In addition, Wingate's head coach Derrick Taylor was named the Coach of the Year, the SAC office announced today.

Bivol, a sophomore from Bordeaux, France, is currently ranked No. 44 nationally and he finished the regular season with a 16-2 overall record, going 12-0 in SAC play at No. 1 singles for the Wolves. He also posted a 15-4 overall record at No. 1 doubles, going 10-2 in league play.

Giurea, a freshman from Petrosani, Romania, played No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Railsplitters this season. He finished the regular season with a 13-7 record in singles and was 8-11 in doubles.

Taylor earns his first SAC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year honor after leading the Bulldogs to a No. 21 national ranking. Under his leadership the men won the SAC Regular Season title, finishing the year with a 17-2 overall record, going 12-0 in conference play.

Joining Bivol on the All-SAC first team singles squad were Rhodri Atkinson of Tusculum, Gabriel Constantino and Florian Walcher of Wingate, Marc Janse of Carson-Newman, and Juan Sengariz of Anderson.

The All-SAC first team doubles honorees were Constantino and Edis Nokic of Wingate, Walcher and Carlo Rosselini of Wingate, and Nemanja and Carlo Rosselini of Tusculum.
