Lenoir-Rhyne's Matau and Carson-Newman's Garrett Named South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Lenoir-Rhyne's Dario Matau was named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, and Carson-Newman's Courtavious Garrett was named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for meets contested during the second week of the indoor track & field season, the Conference office announced today.

Matau, a sophomore sprinter from Sandton, South Africa, took home first place honors in the 200-meter and 60-meter dashes at the Bast-Cregger Invitational last week. He posted NCAA provisional times in both races, winning the 200m with a time of 21.75 seconds and he won the 60m with a time of 6.82 seconds. Matau was also part of the 4x400-meter relay team that posted an NCAA provisional time of 3:21.06.

Garrett, a junior jumper from Greeneville, Fla., won both the long jump and the triple jump at the Bast-Cregger Invitational last week. He posted an NCAA provisional mark of 7.14 meters in the long jump and he had an NCAA provisional leap of 14.74 meters in the triple jump.
