2004-05 South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll Announced

ROCK HILL, SC - The 2004-05 South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll was announced from the SAC office today, with conference record 679 student-athletes recognized for their achievements in the classroom.

The SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll recognizes those student-athletes who carry at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have completed the season in the sports of football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's golf.

The 679 student-athletes represent 39 U. S. states and the District of Columbia, and 32 foreign countries and Canadian provinces. More than a 26 percent (180) of the honorees held grade point averages of 3.75 and higher. Of those, 37 student-athletes carried a perfect 4.00 GPA.

The sport of football had the most honorees with 94, followed by women's soccer with 78. They were followed by baseball (74), softball (64) men's soccer (60), volleyball (58), women's basketball (52), women's cross country (49), women's tennis (38), men's cross country (30), men's tennis (28), men's and women's golf with 20 each, and men's basketball with 14.

Tusculum College led the way with a conference honor roll record 117 student-athletes recognized. Wingate University followed with 105. Newberry College also reached triple digits with 100, followed by Mars Hill with 90. Carson-Newman College and Presbyterian College each placed 68 on the list, followed by Catawba College (66) and Lenoir-Rhyne College (65).

In addition, the SAC Team Grade Point Average Champions were awarded to recognize the highest team GPA in each of the 14 SAC-sponsored sports.

Newberry led the way by winning the GPA title in four sports - men's basketball, baseball, softball, women's tennis.

Presbyterian claimed classroom titles in football and men's tennis. Tusculum took top honors in volleyball and women's basketball. Wingate led the way in men's soccer and women's cross country. Lenoir-Rhyne had the top grades in men's cross country and women's golf. Mars Hill had the top GPA in women's soccer, while Carson-Newman led the way in men's golf.
