Lenoir-Rhyne’s Mizelle, Tusculum’s Searcy Named Softball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne University's Jody Mizelle has been named the South Atlantic Conference Softball Player of the Week and Tusculum College's Erin Searcy earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending February 28, announced conference officials Tuesday.
Mizelle, a freshman shortstop from Colerain, N.C. (Bertie HS), batted .400 (8-for-20) with three home runs and nine runs batted in to lead Lenoir-Rhyne to a 5-1 week as all six games were played at the Catawba College Invitational in Salisbury, N.C. In the opening game against Kutztown Friday, Mizelle hit a home run and drove in all four runs for the Bears. Mizelle added a home run in each contest Saturday, including the game-winning solo round-tripper in a 1-0 victory over Shippensburg in the nightcap. Mizelle leads No. 17 Lenoir-Rhyne (12-4) this year in home runs (six) to go along with a .373 batting average and 15 runs batted in.
Searcy, a senior from Coolidge, Ga. (Thomas County Central HS), threw her second consecutive no-hitter, and the first seven-inning no-hitter in program history, with a 1-0 win over Lees-McRae on Wednesday afternoon. Searcy allowed just two walks and struck out eight while throwing 102 pitches in the gem. She followed up with her fourth straight complete-game win against Alderson-Broaddus on Saturday, giving up one earned run and no walks while striking out five in a 5-2 victory. Searcy is 4-4 in eight starts with a 2.50 earned run average and 41 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings. In her last three starts, Searcy has allowed one earned run over 19 innings or work.
