Lenoir-Rhyne’s Mizelle, Tusculum’s Johnson Named Softball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne University's Jody Mizelle has been named the South Atlantic Conference Softball Player of the Week and Tusculum College's Elizabeth Johnson earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending March 20, announced conference officials Monday.
Both players earn the award for the second time this season.
Mizelle, a freshman shortstop from Colerain, N.C. (Bertie HS), batted .636 (7-for-11) with five home runs and seven runs batted in addition to a 2.091 slugging percentage in leading Lenoir-Rhyne to a 4-0 week. In a doubleheader sweep of Limestone last Thursday at home, Mizelle hit four home runs on the afternoon including a school-record three in the first contest as the Bears prevailed by a 9-2 score. Mizelle added a double, a home run and two RBI in the first game (an 8-0 win) of a doubleheader sweep of South Atlantic Conference-foe Lincoln Memorial Saturday in Harrogate, Tenn. Mizelle currently leads No. 16 Lenoir-Rhyne (23-6, 2-0) in runs scored (31), home runs (11) and runs batted in (27) in 2011.
Johnson threw her third shutout of the season to help the Pioneers finish off a doubleheader sweep of Wingate on Saturday with a 6-0 win. Johnson struck out two and walked one while scattering six hits to boost her record to 11-2 this season. Prior to Saturday's sweep, the Pioneers had lost 22 consecutive meetings with the Bulldogs since 2001.
