MH’s Carringer, C-N’s Ashburn, TC’s Maples Named to Verizon Academic All-District Women’s Basketball Team
Academic All-District First Team
MARS HILL, NC -- Holly Carringer, a 5-9 senior wing from Murphy, NC
(Murphy HS) has been selected as a member of the Verizon Academic
All-District II women's basketball team. Holly carries a 3.83 grade
point average as a Biology Major.
Carringer, a three-year starter on the Lady Lions basketball team, is averaging 11.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game so far this season. She is also converting on 35.7% (45-126) of her 3-point attempts and 77.4% (48-62) of her free throw attempts.
Academic All-District First Team
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman senior guard Monica Ashburn
has been named to the 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-District IV
College Division Women's Basketball Team. Ashburn, a 5-5 guard from
Clarkrange, Tenn., has a 3.8 grade point average in Computer
Science.
A transfer from Roane State Community College, Ashburn has been a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and Carson-Newman Dean's List every semester.
Ashburn is averaging 15.2 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Lady Eagles this season. She leads the team in free throw percentage at 83%. She has helped lead the Lady Eagles to a 13-11 overall record and a second-place tie in the conference standings at 7-4.
The Verizon Academic All-District team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America from institutions within District IV, which includes the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Tennessee.
Julie Maples Named Verizon Academic All-District
STAMFORD, Conn. --- Tusculum College's Julie Maples has been named
to the 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division
Women's Basketball Second Team announced College officials
Thursday.
Maples, a sophomore guard from Knoxville, Tenn., has led Tusculum to one of its best seasons in five years. The South Doyle High School graduate is averaging 14.4 points per game, including 15.8 ppg in her last six outings. She is also the team's best free throw shooter at 82 percent while averaging 4.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest.
Maples has a 3.98 cumulative grade point average majoring in English Education. She has been named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor, Dean's List and Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester.
The Pioneers are 15-9 overall and have won six of their last seven games. TC is tied for second place in the South Atlantic Conference and ranked 10th in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region.
The Verizon Academic All-District team is selected by members of
the College Sports Information Directors of America from
